VoIP Performance Analysis in IPv4 and IPV6 Environment
This paper focuses on the internet protocols used in computer networks to measure the quality of service between IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) and IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6). Technology advancement has necessitated the development of complementary technologies with the transition from IPv4 to IPv6. In contemporary digital communication among the broad internet applications, VoIP stands apart in its significance. It is important to understand that routine protocols like IPv4 and IPv6 are the main factors that contribute to speeding up data transfers in a network. The performance of these protocols is analyzed or tested by their link throughput, convergence time, and other application layer service performance such as voice conferencing and video streaming (Ahmed, 2014). The convergence time in these routine protocols is an imperative aspect in indicating protocol performance. In this study, a simulation model was used to analyze and compare the performance based on many parameters that determine the quality of service of these routine protocols on VoIP (voice over IP).
Discussion
According to Mahmood (2014), extensive research relating to the transition of IPv4 to IPv6 has been carried out to explore the performance in new environment. The IPv6 is the new generation protocol designed to replace the current IPv4. It has not been adopted fully worldwide, but efforts are underway in Asia and Europe to enhance this migration towards IPV6. It is important to realize that the primary advantage of IPv6 over the current version 4 is its large space (128-bit) hence potential to support the quality of service of applications including video and voice. The increasing popularity of VoIP communication software today like Google Talk and Skype make it an important component of future internet hence the interest to compare VoIP performance over IPv4 and IPv6 environment (Mahmood, 2014).
A Comparison of VoIP performance on both networks (IPv6 ad IPv4)
The interest to compare VoIP performance in both protocols as Ahmed (2014) coins is to help determine if there exist differences in performance and quality of service that result from the larger IPv6 packet size. The simulation model in this study by Ahmed focuses on analyzing the VoIP performance during voice data exchange. The tests are done on LAN network in running Windows and Linux operating systems. Measuring the performance is used using mean and maximum values of time between voice packets, delay variation, and throughput. These performance metrics present the results and subject of discussion in this experiment.
In the study by Ahmed and Suleiman (2014), the results were obtained from tests of VoIP services in IPv4 and IPv6 environment and video streaming. The evaluation was based on the quality of service and performance criteria which were calculated and compared against each other. In the first performance metric; throughput of video streaming was carried out in both protocols over a wired and wireless network and measured. The result indicated that the throughput of IPv6 was highest in wired network, and video streaming was also higher. It is important to realize that throughput is defined as the rate of data transfer transmitted from one host to another over a long period (Ahmed, 2014).
The results depict that average throughput in IPv6 which is around 19 Mbps is higher compared to IPv4 in VoIP services. In the same study, the results of the simulation based on the metric of delay variation between IPv4 and IPv6 depicted delay varia...
