Policing Systems and Procedures (Coursework Sample)

Instructions:

1. Read A Question of Ethics, page 176. Explain what you would do after seeing the officer who is your friend, handle the suspect as he did.
2. Watch the video below. With both ethical conduct and discretion in mind, reflect on the decisions and conduct of both the rookie officer and the sergeant, and how the incident could have been prevented in the first place.
3. 3. Read the following items in the module: Law Enforcement Standards of Ethical Conduct (IACP Code of Ethics (https://www.theiacp.org/resources/law-enforcement-code-of-ethics)), the IG Report on the Laquan McDonald shooting by Chicago PD Officer Van Dyke, and the Fort Worth Officer who lied to get a search warrant. Watch the video of the Fort Worth shooting of a black female by a white officer.
4. Some believe giving police discretion is illegal, because discretion can lead to unequal enforcement of the law by some officers (e.g., an officer who gives a warning to all white drivers, but tickets all black drivers), and police don't have the right to selectively enforce laws.

Inflicting injury or offense by physical contact is known as battery. Spitting on someone is also a form of battery and spitting on a police officer is a serious provocation (Brandl, 2019). My recommendation would be to get the person arrested for battery, as well. However, the officer should use just the level of force required to arrest the suspect. The officer does not have the right to spit on him too or subdue him with unnecessary force. I would only ask him to protect himself, but not to avenge the assailant, as stipulated by the law.
