Population Statistics
In the US, population census is carried out after every ten years. The last census was carried out in 2010. Bearing this in mind, we can estimate the current population in 2016, taking an annual growth rate of 0.9%. This population obtained will be the current population figure and will be used to derive all other values.
We will use the fomula: P ( 1+r)n where:
P = current population size
r = population growth rate
n = number of years.
In our case, we are going to use the case of New York City which registered a population of 19,378,102 people in 2010 census.
Therefore, P=19,378,102(1+0.009)6 (since its now 6 years since the last census)
P = 19378102 x 1.0552=20,448,348.35 (approximately 20,448,348 since the number of people can only be whole numbers.)
In 10 years time, the population of the city will be:
20,448,348 (1+0.009)10 =20448348 x 1.0937= 22365050.85 (approximately 22365050)
To calculate how long the population will double, we use the same formula :
2P= P(1+r)n
2x20448348 = 20,448,348 (1+0.009)n
40,896,696=20448348(1.009)n
2=1.009n
Log 2 =n log 1.009
n = 77.36
Therefore the population will double in the year (2016+77.36)= 2093.36 (app’ 2094)
Factors that influence growth of population include increase in fertility rate. The birth rate which id the number of births per 1000 people in a year has increased. The death rate which is the number of deaths per one thousand people in a year has also greatly reduced. The number of people that move in to New York, also known as immigration has also increased leading to a population increase. Emigration which is the movement of people out of a certain place has decreased.
There are various factors that lead to some states experiencing a steady decline in population growth rate. These include reduced a declining rate of net immigration as well as slower Asian and Latino growth rate. It is good to appreciate the fact that most immigrants into any state in the US come from Latin America and also Asia but however, it has been observed over the las several years that their rate of growth have reduced quite below the peak. A decline in the rate of population growth rate has also been associated with increased population aging. It has also been reported that there is decrease in the population growth rate since as a result of decreased rate of fertility in some regions.
Several measures can be undertaken to curb the steady rate of population growth rate. These include giving widespread access to effective options of contraceptives for both genders. Also, ensuring education through auxiliary school for all, particularly young ladies. Eradication sexual biasness from law and equal open door for economic opportunities, wellbeing, and culture will also help to reduce this greatly. Age-fitting sexuality instruction for all understudi...
