Exercise 10 (Description of a Study Sample)
Exercise 10 (Answers on Questions to be Graded)
1 The demographic variables measured at the nominal level of measurement in the Oh et al. (2014) study were height, age, body mass index (BMI), weight, lifestyle (years since menopause, vitamin D-rich food intake, calcium-rich food intake), alcohol consumption, regular exercise, history of fracture, and smoking. These categories are summed up in the nominal level of measurement since they are mutually exclusive to the individuals as participants can only fit in one specific category.
2 The statistics calculated to describe body mass index (BMI) in this study are weight and height. These were appropriate as the participants’ weight and height were measured individually to come up with the expected results in calculating the body mass index from the data collected. The mean of height and weight was calculated to attain the mean BMI from the mean age in the selected participants.
3 The distributions of scores for BMI were similar for the intervention and control groups as the data recorded was evenly distributed in both the intervention and control groups thus displaying relatable results.
4 There was no significant difference in BMI between the intervention and control groups as the control only relayed the anticipated results from an estimation and yet the recorded data was distributed similarly to the data distributed from the intervention group.
5 Based on the sample size of N = 41, there were no smokers thus;
Calculations:
Smoked SampleTotal Sample x 100%= 041 x 100%=0% smoked
40 participants were non-drinkers (alcohol) thus;

Non-drinkers (alcohol) SampleTotal Sample x 100%= 4041 x 100%=97.56%=98% Non-drinkers (alcohol)
6 The bone mineral density (BMD) for the study participants was measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) with the use of a DEXXUM T machine. The quality of this measurement method is that it allows accurate measurement of bone mineral con tent (BMC, g) and bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm2) of the lumbar spine and proximal femur. This is done to assess risks of osteoporosis. It is important fro the participants to have their bone health problems diagnosed and effectively managed. Further information on the dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) with the use of a DEXXUM T machine measurement method may be found in /books/NBK233779/
7 The mean and standard deviations for the specified data were calculated to determine differences between the intervention and control groups for the lumbar and femur neck BMDs. The groups weren’t significantly different for BMDs as the results found were related for the participants in the two groups.
8 The researchers stated that there were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics of the intervention and control groups (see Table 2). These groups are homogenous at the beginning of the study as they describe things that are of similar kind in all the participants. This is important in testing the effectiveness of the ther...
