Introduction
Social issues are generally made of difficulties that interfere with our normal real life. These social issues also affect the way people react to various situations in their lives. People become ignorant to various adversities in their lives hence end up promoting social evils in the society (Kissin 2013). Not only individuals but also organizations have tried to pull together effort to try and curb this menace but end up getting minimal positive feedback. One of the major social problems in our societies today includes alcoholism (Flowers 2010).
Alcoholism is a host of various social problems in people’s lives today. Alcoholism not only affects the drinker but also their family and the people close to them (Flowers 2010). This habit destroys their families emotionally and financially where they end up suffering a huge cost through insurance payment, decreased productivity, and work-related consequences. It has been scientifically proven that alcoholism is usually instigated by a number of factors which majorly include; biological and genetic factors (Kissin 2013).
Biological approach reveals to us that there are forces that drive us to pursue repeatedly various pleasurable activities. After in-depth neurobiological research, it has been noted that brain functioning is the root course of alcohol addiction (Kissin 2013). The victim becomes addicted to the chemical that is released by their brains, not the activity or substance that causes this release. This biological factor blends with the genetics since brain functioning is greatly determined by genetics (Flowers 2010).
Studies done by various scholars reveal that genetics contribute to about 50% likelihood that individuals may develop an addiction problem (Kissin 2013). They further reveal that with the increase of alcohol addiction and other addictions which are predetermined genetically, addiction should be described as a chronic disease of the brain.
