Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) is a curriculum based on learning that is assessed on the potential and needs of an individual under a flexible framework and other related parameters that move and work according to the learners' demands. The curriculum has several functions for the growth of a child in his/her early education. CBC promotes hands-on training and infuses the acquisition of new skills and knowledge through practical experimenting to become better at the succeeding stage and experiential learning. When undertaking the CBC curriculum, exams are not necessary but competency level is assessed on different parameters based on the ability of the child to undertake and perform practical work successfully (Mike 2022). The paper aims at analyzing the CBC curriculum and how it is critical to the development of a child in an early childhood setting.
Competency-Based Curriculum
This curriculum aims at promoting hands-on training and infusing the acquisition of new knowledge that can be gained through observation, practice, and conducting practical experimenting. In recent years, CBC has gained a lot of attention from scholars due to its ability to improve the ability of the child to promote his/her talent to ensure that everything is done accordingly (Akala, 2021). The introduction of CBC in a country to supplement the education sector aims to at promoting talent and improve knowledge in certain fields. The pressure that comes with national examination is reduced as a result of introducing CBC. The stiff and unhealthy competition that exists in the education sector is reduced whereby learning is mainly focused on practical experiments rather than in-class learning activities. The CBC curriculum is considered to be a friendly science whereby children can select the easy option of liberal arts and humanities (Parson, Childs, & Elzie, 2018). Therefore, learners are encouraged to take pure or applied sciences, social sciences, and pure sciences. Many scholars agree that CBC is a friendly and flexible curriculum for learners and is inclusive for laggards and fast learners.
CBC Description
The aim of implementing CBC in the education sector is to help the student to develop their talent and knowledge of different careers. CBC plays an important role when it comes to evaluating the learning ability of a child during his/her venture into early childhood education. Parents and children are directly involved in this curriculum (Zheng et al, 2020). Parents are involved in purchasing the materials and directing the child on different activities provided by their educator. Parents act as mentors in the learning process of their child and they are mandated with the duty of fostering the skills and knowledge of a child through the provision of relevant content that pertains to the field. Therefore, the framework has been accepted by most scholars due to its ability to increase parents’ engagement in the learning process of the child.
Developmentally Appropriate Framework
Implementation of CBC in the educational system plays a critical role when it comes to parents’ participation in the development of the child's talent, skills, and knowledge. Both educators and parents are entitled to the responsibility of ensuring that the curriculum is followed as per the school calendar to ensure that the child can develop. The curriculum tries to balance learning and experimentation with co-curriculum activities that are helpful to the development of the child from the elementary level to a higher level (Parson, Childs, & Elzie, 2018). For instance, just to mention a few programs that are implemented in the CBC include; training the kids on how to do masonry-related tasks, how to be police officers, how to be an artist through modeling, how to repair electric-related gadgets, how to practice farming intensively, to be businessmen and women, how to practice law and how to make YouTube videos. \
