Over the years technology has replaced the analog communication system with both apps and social networks besides transforming our daily life and improving the security system of the country. The evolution of technology directly has also affected the way in which criminal justice system operates at important levels. The wide range of technology that has been employed in support of the justice system include; weapons, computers, automobiles, and telephony, database management software. The adoption and the implementation and adoption of these technologies have been seen to directly shape the policies and practices of the justice system. For example, the development of modern communications and transport technologies in the 18th century was able to increase the response capability of police and changed citizen calls for services. On the other hand computer technologies have been able to increase the capacity of data processing, information sharing and communications within cross agencies.
Criminal justice today have been able to utilize robots, GPS systems, high power computer systems and advanced cameras In solving crimes committed by persons in the society. The mentioned bellow are detailed technology methods used by criminal justice system in solving crimes.
Database and information exchange
Use of computer database has become one of the most important technological tools used in the field today in solving crimes. There exist the database system for DNA testing and profiling, fingerprints and crime mapping programs. In the previous years the agencies had difficulties in exchanging information as information was hand written and stored in files kept in a room. On the contrary right now computer database has assisted law enforcement professionals to be able to find and exchange information easily and in more affordable way.
Detecting and positioning systems
The criminal justice agencies have seen more unique forms of technology advances that include the use of robots, robotic cameras and flying drones( currently the agency uses robots to diffuse bombs instead of sending officers to these dangerous situations , the agencies also use robotic drones as their bird’s-eyes-view of a crime scene without sending an officer up in the air), the agencies also has extended and improved the use of gunshot detection system; this system made of electronic sensors installed in high-crime areas, this system helps the officers be able to detect where the gunshot has come from. The use of GPS and GIS system, officers use these systems to get to a scene using the most effective route to pinpoint where a suspect has been located. The agencies also have adopted the use of automatic plate recognition; then law enforcement agencies is using a system where cameras are installed inside police cars, the cameras are able to automatically run every single license plate the camera is able to view, through this the officer in charge is able to realize weather a car has been stolen or the drivers has warrants out for his or her arrest.
Technology on law enforcement executive management has various effects both negative and positive, they include; political and economic inabilities, the need for training the officers, the difficulty in using the technology and also the technology doesn’t seem to be working properly always as expected. Most of the technologies the agencies found to be having implementation problem were technologies that were not very common in policing. These technologies includes; voice activated vehicle system, the sound wave incapacitation weapons, aerial surveillance equipment and the direct energy vehicle stoppers that are only used by 3% of the agencies.
