The Herzberg’s theory of motivation pinpoints that certain factors directly encourage staffs to work harder-motivators- and there are also some other conditions that would demoralize an employee if absent but would not in themselves encourage the staff to work harder-hygiene factors (Gautam, 2015).
The motivator factors are more concerned with the job itself for example recognition for achievement, achievement, responsibility of task, and the job itself. The hygiene factors that surround the job. An example of hygiene factors includes status, salary, safety, working condition and policies and regulations (Dunn, 2010). The Herzberg’s theory advocates for management that is more of a democratic type with the aim of enhancing the nature and content of the actual job. Democracy in management can be achieved through job enrichment, jog enlargement and empowerment (Gautam, 2015).
The Herzberg’s theory is very crucial towards the health care manager is it is there to define motivation to his employees. Managers will have the responsibility of creating a motivating environment that is less stressful to employees (Gautam, 2015). Highly motivated employees tend to be productive hence the application of the Herzberg’s theory. The responsibility of health care managers towards their employees is to ensure that hygiene factors are not neglected, and proper mechanisms are implemented to facilitate the motivators towards job satisfaction. (Dunn, 2010).
The Herzberg’s theory advocates that too much reliance on factor either the hygiene factor of the motivators may lead job satisfaction. One of the most common mistake by many managers is the commitment to attend hygiene factor while neglecting the motivators with the expectations of motivating an employee (Dunn, 2010).
