Introduction
Sustainable building refers to buildings that serve to satisfy the current generation while safeguarding the needs of the future generation. Sustainable buildings should use fewer resources to manage and cut their energy usage. Green building encourages the use of building processes, which conform to environmental protection standards by efficiently using resources during the building’s lifetime. The building must obey green laws during construction, maintenance, operation, change and destruction. The whole construction team, including the architect, engineers and owner, must work together to meet the required standards. Green buildings have a higher durability, usefulness, comfort and are cheaper to build in comparison to classical buildings.
Background Theory
The Middle East has a poor reputation of maintaining green standards. Many construction firms, in the Middle East, are adopting new technologies to improve their current construction methods and build greener constructions. Green structures help to cut the impact of the building on the natural environment and human health. Green buildings should use resources such as water and energy sparingly. They should also cut pollution and environmental destruction. Green buildings should use natural locally available materials.
The Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar is an example of a green building. The building was constructed and proposed for the 2022 world cup. The building will have a circular shape surrounded by a ditch that connects six bridges to the car park. The roof appears to be floating on the bowl while supported by columns. The Lusail stadium is equipped with photovoltaic systems, which lead to zero production of carbon.
Discussion
Sustainable development directly refers to the reduction of the use of nonrenewable sources of energy and cutting pollution. Green building needs to meet these goals and many other social, economic and environmental goals. Modern green building refers to redesign of existing buildings, to conform to green building requirements. The Lucia Stadium design has helped make strides towards green building in the Middle East.
The features of the building include initiatives to cut energy usage; these include the energy used to extract raw materials. The Lucia Stadium demands low power to run since the building design should allows lower air leakage via the building envelope i.e. the bridge between air-conditioned and unconditioned region. Designers should also included additional insulation in the ceilings, walls and floors. The building is equipped with solar panels, which is a renewable source of energy, used to provide energy for the building and to power air conditioning systems. The energy collected is also used in surrounding buildings.
To cut the need for air conditioning during the summer, designers allowed the stadium to have a dome shape that allowed free circulation of air. Designers placed the transparent roof right to allow natural light into rooms in the stadium; hence, cut the need for electric lighting. The building also had a concave profile to enhance natural air conditioning. The designers included six entrants to the building. Thus, the building designs eased movement in, around the building by making parts of the building easily accessible thus increase the productivity of workers, and safeguard the health of the occupants.
Sustainable buildings should cut water usage and keep up water quality. The design of a building should eased water harvesting, purification and recycling. The Lusail Iconic stadium is surrounded by a moat that forms a pool of water, which helps collect rainwater that drains off its dome shaped body. Sullage and non-sewage water can also be used for gardening and enhance the aesthetic features of the building.
