WORK SPECIALIZATION
Labor specialization is the separation of tasks in an organization. Managers usually assign tasks to staff according to skill and preference of the worker. Labor specialization has its disadvantages despite being adopted globally.
One of the major setbacks of labor specialization is that it is not a customer focused structure (Lyons et al. 113). Job specialization may, therefore, tend to focus on individual structures while ignoring the global goal of an organization. It should not be the case.
The cause of having a non-customer focused is managers who focus on individual roles more than service delivery to the customers. Since specialization can be said to lead to productiveness, managers think that by having specialized tasks increase in production will result eventually. It may not be the case as customer satisfaction should come first before the organization's interests. Customer satisfaction should be the essential goal of an organization as it may lead to increased profits due to growing demand for the products (Lyons et al. 113).
Therefore, managers should ensure that workflow in the organization promotes customer requirements. It can be achieved by optimizing the supply chain and re-engineering before the consideration of labor specialization.
