Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil
Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil is an 1886 mature and polemical assertion of his philosophy on individual morality with possible implications for the 21st century. In the book, Nietzsche opposes and rejects the traditional moral dogmatism that there is a single moral code to live by to achieve the prevalent single moral truth. The book’s nine chapters propose that such beliefs are stifling to the human spirit, which leads to bias, mistrust, and tyranny. Instead, Nietzsche suggests that true morality is individual – it is discovered by an individual through painstaking experimentation, erring, and questioning until a conclusion is inferred. As such, one can only arrive at true morality by suffering to discover one’s unique values, which culminate in one’s unique truth.
Beyond Good and Evil is a clinical and affirmative confirmation that Friedrich Nietzsche was the towering philosopher of his age. This nine-chapter philosophical text categorically articulates his mature philosophy while also crying out for moral freedom. In the first chapter, Nietzsche (11), says that “All over Europe these days, the problem “of the real and the apparent world” gets taken up so eagerly and with such acuity.” In this excerpt, Nietzsche claims that today claim to have inherent knowledge, which they do not. Eisenberg (111) supports this perspective when he writes that Nietzsche’s motif “is not the devaluation of values, but the revaluation of values.” On this basis, Nietzsche advocates for the incorporation of other cultures in modern morality.
