Benevolent is a Latin word derived from bene, which represents ''good'' and velle, expressing "desire". The history of slavery was initially considered to be shaped by George Washington, the USA's founding father. This paper will discuss in detail the benevolent in Africa American history. In 1743, enslavement was considered for social and economic benefits to colonial America. Washington gave his slaves land to form their community and marry. He used both punishment and reward to his slaves when they failed his expectations. In 1775, acting as a commander in chief, he refused to accept African America in to military ranks until he found it appropriate during the American Revolution War (Hirschfeld, 161). In 1778, at a public venue, Washington refused to sell his enslaves and even separate the enslaved families. George Washington felt that the American slaves were affecting the country's unity but never publicly declared it.
Privately, he was thinking of freeing enslaved individuals in the mid-1790s. Washington is considered benevolent as he facilitated the American Civil War that ended enslavement. He provided more than enough to his slaves and ensured they were treated like other Americans. In 1774, George Washington condemns the slave trade as it was inhuman in the Fairfax Resolves. Ona Judge was born in 1774 at Mount Vermont and worked as a maid for Martha Washington.
When Ona escaped from Washington, she was posted on the Philadelphia Gazette, and there was a reward for a person who would return her. All these enslavement actions restricted Ona's life until she escaped to Greenland, building her career as a Judge.
