Exploring Barriers to Effective Social Work
Interventions for Non- engaging
Families with Children Services
Abstract
Families play an important role in supporting positive outcomes in children services within the social work context. Their support, involvement and engagement are fundamental in helping the achievement of the intended results and outcomes in children services. Therefore, families that do not want to engage with children services have detrimental effects on the practice’s outcomes. Forrester et al (2012) explain that although families’ resistance or inability to engage with children services is a ubiquitous feature in family and child social work, there has been limited research directed towards it. This dissertation focuses on this issue with specific reference to the barriers to effective social work interventions regarding families who resist engagement with social services. Seven barriers have been identified which, it is argued, significantly affect social work interventions on affected families. Several relevant and available study findings regarding these barriers are reviewed to understand the challenges that they present. Based on the findings of this review, appropriate solutions are recommended. These are critical to enhancing the effectiveness of social work interventions, especially on families who do not want to engage with children services. It is concluded that addressing these barriers to effective social work interventions provides an opportunity of contributing to better and improved social work practice outcomes by increasing families’ engagement and also making contributions to social work theory.
