LANGUAGE CAN BRING PEOPLE A SENSE OF IDENTITY
Can you imagine staying with a man with giant muscles in jail but can't communicate with each other due to a language barrier? In Born a Crime, Trevor Noah wants to reveal to readers that language can bring people a sense of identity; People are more likely to trust you when you're sharing the same language. It’s more crucial than other factors such as color which assist in determining someone's identity. It also helps people in getting along, protecting them and enhancing confidence between them.
Shared language has a great significance. Noah uses his experience in jail to illustrate its significance. When everyone is terrified by the Hulk that is brought by cops, Trevor gets along well with him. This is facilitated by the fact that Trevor can speak Tsonga, which is the mother language of Hulk. Nelson Mandela once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” Additionally, Trevor finds Hulk is the sweetest man in the world and the reason why he is in this jail is because of shoplifting PlayStation games (Noah 236). They develop a relationship through the shared language they speak.
