Sears, Roebuck And Co: The Auto Center Scandal
Sears, Roebuck and Co. existed in the 19th century as a company dealing with mail orders, sale of farm supplies and other consumer items. The first retail store for the company was introduced in the mid of 20th century. Due to the changes in the society involving the movement from farms to factories and many homes having automobiles, many retail store in the United States makes presentations of different stories. Sears came into an agreement of a multibillion-dollar settlement with the state of California and some other 41 states, which had similar charges. The state of California placed the company on a state of three-year probation and later settled some suits on consumer class actions. In the month of July 1992, the congress had set gearings to be heard on frauds concerning the auto repair industry. The long-term impact of the scandal is not well stated. Sears have now come to an agreement of selling its firm securities including the discovery card, real estate and mortgage business and 20% of its all-state insurance. In the end of the year 1992, there was a lag of auto center sales and news reported that other areas employees of sear’s business were feeling the pressure from the quotas on sales. These businesses included sales from the insurance and compliance.
Analysis of the Case
Moral disengagement mechanisms tend to reduce a person’s identification with the victims of unethical behavior. This mechanism makes thinking a characteristic of those who commit genocide. One can take a case of mortgage lenders thinking that people who took out loans in that they could not afford to pay were dumb and not worthy to be concerned. Some of the mechanisms took themselves to situations which are certain than others. Some other researches show that some people are most likely to have this kind of thinking regardless of the existing situation. The individuals whose propensity is high to disengage their morals in this kind of overall thinking have been noticed to decrease other people’s empathy. They are thought to be morally cynical, their behavior is seen to be resulting from chance or fate, and their moral identity is reduced as compared to other identities.
The decision of sears did not consider the character and integrity of the individuals as part of business ethics. That is the reason, which made cognitive biases, get into the business and later causing the downfall. The characters' minds were composed of illusion rather than reality and was not able to make moral decision about the integrity of the business. The important idea that is reflected in this paper is that individuals should practice to think positively about their self-ethics. This comes with filtering and distorting of information for maintaining self-image. From the case of sears, it is evident that people tend to think of themselves as more honest, fair and ethical than other people do.
Trevino and Nelsons Model Of Decision-Making
In the analysis of his participation in the decision without recalling the pinto, Gioia makes suggestions about his behavior was influenced largely by the decision making of the script. Scripts are frameworks, which are made cognitively for influencing human behavior and actions. Even though they are not written down generally, scripts contain information on the appropriate sequence of a scenario in situations routinely. Processing of information is made efficiently because there exists a cognitive script, which allows the individual to reach an established pattern of behavior and carry out actions automatically without far much contemplation of the decision or action in a detailed analysis (O'Rourke, 2012).
Active thinking is not a requirement since the existing situation fits the prototype of the minds, which triggers the scripts and more so behaviors. Many people discover that they have been cruising on automatic report after arriving to a certain destination but they cannot remember the directions that were used in order to get there. We are using a behavior pattern that is established and the route was somehow familiar such that we could not think about it anymore. Similar things happen at our workplace, behaviors become a routine activity, and that is when individuals ate tempted to do many things without even thinking. However, if a symptom seems not to be part of the script, it stand chances of being overlooked ( Trevino & Nelson, 2010).
Any attempts that may be made in order to reduce making of decisions that are complex in quantitative terms are quite not common at most times in business environments. This is considered more competitive in nature and hence not encouraged in much business as an ethic to run the organization. This way helps to make decisions, which are complicated to be made simpler. This is often an advantage .Nowadays; many government agencies as well as firms that deal with insurance often try to assign human life some value as they struggle to ensure that they get the benefits and costs of any regulations that seem to be new.
Those who were involved in the management of relief efforts immediately after world trade center was attacked by terrorists had to make a decision on how much amount of money was to be awarded to those families who had unfortunately been left by those they loved in the terrorist attack.
The paper is concerned on the worthiness of life, as it is the most crucial thing in life. How possible it is that the lives of some people are more worthy than the lives of their counterparts. This is simply because of the fact that had they lived they would have a higher earning potential than their counterparts would. It is quite unfortunate to note that in our modern lives such a kind of decision-making is part of our lives especially in the modern lifestyle. Such kind of decisions are usually made in the court ( Johnson, 2007).
These activities are reflected in insurance companies on a daily basis. However, the likely disadvantage of the reduction of human life into terms that can be quantified. Such a kind of simplification process can help to remove issues of moral criteria from the process of decision making as well as the reduction of ethical awareness. Anot...
