Introduction
On January the 29th 1954, Oprah Gail Winfrey was born. She was born in the poverty stricken parts of Mississippi to a teenage mother, Vernita Lee, who opted to raise her in the heart of Milwaukee. Being in a bad neighborhood proved to be difficult but became unbearable after she was raped when she was just nine years old. She became pregnant five years later and was forced to go live with her father in Tennessee. It was, notably, while she was in high school that the stars shone for her. She got a part-time radio job at a local station that saw her rise to a career in Media after completing her communications degree from Tennessee State University. After hosting several shows on television, including Chicago’s WLS –TV morning program, she finally launched her show in 1986.
Concept or Idea
Her landmark is the Oprah Winfrey show that highlights issues in the society that people often face. The show is a piece of art because it tells the story of how people tackle the social matters in life. In addition, her creative side was showcased in her acting career, movie production and owning a television network. She is also a household name in the collection of antiques, art paintings, and clothes. All the above are things that highlight her creative side. They make up the aspect of art that needed to be celebrated. For one, the performance art that she has exhibited in her productions and appearances is phenomenal. For instance, the movie, the women of Brewer Palace that was produced by her company, Harpo production, is an artistic way of expressing the issues that affect women. She was the principal actress in a movie that artistically highlights the things that women have to go through in pursuit of a better and happier life. The talents of Oprah are manifested in the film that showcased her strength in the performance arts. She acts as Mattie, a woman who was impregnated by a local man and has to face the adversities of life on her own. Her talents were exemplified in the color purple in which she stars. It explores the themes of racism, the alienation of women and sexism.
Oprah’s bold, aggressive and yet empathetic style of listening has made her a good talk show host. She has hosted everybody who has a story to tell. Her show has proved to be inspirational, motivating, and humorous in most occasions. She even hosted the legend of pop artistic music Michael Jackson in 1993. The show had the highest number of views with 36.5 million dollars. Her interviews were characterized by stories that mean or change something. Often, her ability in performance art of aspects such as poetry has helped the talk show genius to get information from her guests. She was the only host who can make a guest reveal things they never thought they would on national television. Her subtle yet commanding way of questioning coupled with her aggressiveness and humor have shown success in television talk shows. In addition, Oprah was a motivational speaker who encourages people. Because of her ability to show empathy, her viewers can identify with her performances. She brings the same into her acting and television shows and is, therefore, able to speak to a crowd of people. Her background serves as a firm foundation for the way that she relays information. Every time Oprah does an interview or speaks to a crowd of people, they can feel the poetic element in the manner that she represents information. That poetic element was acquired when she was still young. She represented her school in poetry all the way to the national level, a clear indication of her talents in performance art.
