The Walking Dead, Star Wars, Gods of Egypt, X-men and Warcraft are some of the films that feature post-apocalyptic themes. Today, almost every trailer released features a variant on the theme of post-apocalypse. Within the first twenty deafening minutes of a movie, there is the consumption of cities by walls of fire as oceans and rivers explode to give out plumes of dark smoke. Castles fall into dust, lizards bring down palaces and terrified children in a school bus watch in horror as normalcy is restored. Filmmakers are continually exploiting the post-apocalyptic themes for a variety of reasons which are aimed at fulfillment of the needs of the audience and reflection upon functional systems of the society.
The post-apocalyptic themes in films serve to reaffirm people on why they struggle to unite with nature, the world and its resources as well as social systems. For instance, the theme of destruction by supernatural powers manifested in powerful rivers, oceans and fires that damage property and dispossess humans serve as a cautionary measure (Weaver, 2014).
