Introduction
Genetically Modified Organisms refer to plants, microbes, or animals whose DNA is altered using genetic engineering techniques. The first GMO food products were commercialized in the early 1990s and have mainly been used in western countries such as the US. This technology has become more popular across the world, with developed and developing countries alike adopting it. Genetically modified foods have become a controversial issue as producers and consumers attempt to weigh their benefits against the environmental side effects and potential biomedical risks. There have been increasing concerns from the public, particularly regarding genetically modified foods and possible health problems. It is a pertinent issue for individuals looking to live a healthy and risk-free life. The sensitivity of this topic has triggered several studies and statistics developed in support and against the use of GMOs in food. Several organizations and individuals believe that genetically modified organisms have a negative impact on humans, while others have found evidence supporting the notion that GMOs are healthier than traditional foods. Genetically modified foods are a negative thing to have in the modern world and should not be endorsed or promoted. They cause more harm than good due to their detrimental effects on humans and animals, environmental hazards, and negative impact on sustainable farming.
Counter Argument
The FAO notes that food production will need to be increased by 60% by 2050 to cater to the growing population, increased urbanization, and match the ever-increasing diet changes (Smyth, Phillips, & Kerr, 2016). With the limited availability of arable land, a vast majority of this increase in food production will enhance crop intensity and the increased yield on existing land. Biotechnology is the only solution to food insecurity, capable of feeding the ever-growing population in the world by increasing yields to produce more food in less land. GMOs mean
