In The Life of a Bacteria
I am bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. I am a Gram-positive, motile, anaerobic spore-forming, rod-shaped organism belonging to the genus Clostridium. According to Rood et al. (2016), I can be found in any region all over the world because I thrive in soils, sediments of lakes and ponds, animal and plant products, and sometimes in the intestinal tracks and wounds of human beings and animals.
To add on that, I am well distinguished because I serve as an effective treatment for medical conditions and involuntary muscle disorders such as strabismus, focal dystonias, headache, hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, chronic diseases, and anti-aging medication. Regardless, Rood et al. (2016) postulate that I can produce Botulinum toxin. The toxin is defined as one of the most poisonous biological substance in the world. Due to my nature, therefore, human beings refer to me as the “miracle poison.”
When referring to my morphology, under the microscopic appearance, you will realize that the cells of most of my strains occur as straight or slightly curved rods with the varying size of about 1.5 to 2.0 micrometers in length. Further, due to my size, I can snake around the SNARE protein which is responsible for the transmission of the nerve impulses resulting in paralyzes in the hosts’ body (Smith, Hill, & Raphael, 2015). To add on that, my organisms can penetrate to the host's defenses where I multiply within the tissues. Also, because I survive in macrophages, I can avoid the hosts' detection or distraction, and that increases my chances of interfering with the hosts’ defense system by binding to the constant regions of their antibodies and the unrecognizable phagocytes. Also, Rood et al. (2016) assert that I have the ability manifest myself into eight toxin groups identified as A, B, C1, C2, D, E, F, and G. These exotoxins enable me to produce Botulinum toxin.
The most prevalent botulism is foodborne botulism. It occurs when an individual consumes contaminated food after the spores of my organisms germinate in the food under anaerobic conditions (Smith et al., 2015). When inside an individual’s body system, not only do I paralyze the muscles needed for breathing, but I also cause gastrointestinal problems and interfere with muscle stimulation. Also, the infants are susceptible to the toxins I produce when my spores from the contaminated food germinate in their digestive track. Even more, I can infect wounds. That being said, Rood et al. (2016) affirm that within 18 to 36 hours after an individual consumes the contaminated food and displays signs and symptoms such as dry mouth, nausea, abdominal cramps, blurred vision, dysarthria and muscle weakness, an initial diagnosis should be made.
Besides the identification of the signs and symptoms, a confirmatory test should be conducted using the individuals’ serum, stool, or the contaminated food to enable the physicians to differentiate botuli...
