Statistics is a branch of science that studies procedures in data collection and analysis and data interpretation. This is used to analyze the information gathered through quantitative or qualitative research and the results are applied to the subject matter it concerns in reality. This field uses mathematical equations such as solving for ratios and probabilities. The primary philosophies of statistics lie on uncertainty and variation. Uncertainty ensues when the results do not establish a definite answer while variation exists due to the difference in the approaches or systems used in investigations. On the other hand, probability, the most vital part of statistics, is responsible for the mathematical calculations CITATION Pie01 \l 1033 (Piegel, Schiller, Srinivasan, & LeVan, 2001).
Statistics can be applied in health and it is called health statistics. Here, the data are measured and interpreted to become a piece of evidence in testing a hypothesis. Furthermore, it is used by the World Health Organization (WHO) to predict and record the mortality and morbidity rates and risk factors. Also, WHO is responsible for data dissemination gathered using health statistics (World Health Organization, n.d.).
