Water Quality in Louisiana
From a biological standpoint, water is a necessity for all living organisms. Without water, life would be utterly impossible, especially for human beings who need water for all the physiological, anatomical, histological, and other functions of the body. As Lilley (2004) contends, water is the primary medium in the lymphatic systems, aids in osmoregulation of cells, lubrication of joints, is a significant component of blood, permits hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions of major molecules that allow for development and stabilization of plasma membrane and conformation of proteins. On these grounds, the authorities entrusted with preservation and management of water resources; and supply of water for both domestic and industrial consumption should prioritize safety and quality. Contrarily, the authorities sometimes fail to live up to their responsibilities. Out of the strong impetus that arises from such detrimental failures, this essay analyzes Louisiana Water Company’s 2017 water quality report to reveal the quality issues –the point and non-point sources of water pollution –the impacts of the contamination on the environment and health, and the management practices deliberated to minimize water pollution and mitigate its risks.
