Introduction
Organizational behavior is the information application and studies regarding how people in an organization relates. It can be divided into three; micro organization behavior which is the study of an individual in an organization; meso organizational behavior which is the study of how groups work; macro organizational behavior which is the study of an organization relation. It is mainly based on the organizational administration’s values, visions, objectives and beliefs which has an effect on the organizational culture made up of formal and informal organization and also the social environment.
Culture is important as it helps to verify the kind of communication and leadership in the organization. Communication and leadership in an organization motivates how an employee will work and this will cause effects of the results that they will yield. Good leadership can be explained or shown by relationship and task behavior of the manager. Task behavior can be best described as one mean communication by the leader and to what amount, giving details to every member what is to be done, how, where and when the task should be finished while relationship behavior is a two means communication by the leader and to what amount, giving that socioemotional sustain which makes it possible of behaviors. Organizational behavior analysis is thus important for human resource as it improves the production of a member in a group.
Types of culture
Culture is the nurtured behavior that includes gathering of beliefs, relations, values, knowledge, thoughts and feelings, skills, religion, objects and material ownership and how groups of different people live. Through imitation and communication it is able to be transferred from generation to generation hence is simply defined as collection of ideas and values by traditional groups accepted and followed from generation to generation as they are friendly (Staw, et. al, 1981). Culture is made up of different types but only three are commonly highlighted. They include Pluralism, Dualism and Salad bowl.
Pluralism is where there are multiple small groups preserving their distinctive culture uniqueness within the organizational. Dualism is where an organizational clinch two cultures comfortably while salad bowl integrates a number of cultures.
Amazon.com is one of the biggest online dealers in the world. Being among the biggest dealers it is also recognized for its wide diverse company culture. Amazon.com is an electronic business company that initial began with online bookshop and later ventured to selling of video games, software, jewelry, MP3 streaming and download, DVDs, CDs, furniture and even toys. Amazon.com culture can be defined as salad bowl as it allows integration of many cultures in the company from different regions and countries (Presthus, 1962). This can be proofed by its many offices and websites all over the world such as United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, China and many other countries including its headquarters being in United States. Allowing the integration of many cultures has aid to its success as it comes with advantages such as open communication that is crucial in allowing handy information to flow to every member without diversification of culture being an obstacle. A person’s personality is said to be shaped by his or her own culture as every culture has its own values and customs. Each member should be able to put up with the values, customs and norms of everyone in the company, salad bowl play an important role in helping members cope with culture difference and bring out the best in it by being productive.
Amazon.com embracing salad bowl helps to treat every member equally each getting equal benefits and bonuses thus creating an environmental friendly surrounding. It has also set rules to employ a certain equal number of people from different localities with different background also equalizing the number of females as to male. It has a flat hierarchy where office room is not given out according to position thus creating equal chances to do extremely well and also enhancing discussion as every member is able to participate therefore improving on the communication (Berry & Parasuraman, 2004). This makes the members of staff satisfied with their work therefore putting all their best to have better results and it has been attributed as one of the success of Amazon.com.
Modes of communication in the organization
Amazon has a number of modes and methods of communication that enables easy flow of information. It is diverse in that it employs both the methods of communication which are writing and verbal and are very effective and result orienting. The offices being open that is, there are no rooms or doors that separate workers thus communication is open to everybody in the room and also helps to maintain business as one cannot get involved in leisure activities. Communication by either writing or verbal in an organization builds the relationship between the workers and the customers but is sometimes faced by challenges such as which method is best for the different number of customers and how maximum will it deliver. Depending on the situation any form of communication maybe used. Amazon is an online company thus most of the work is through the internet including emails and modern technology such as chating in facebook on the company’s page, writing is also used but rarely probably when there has to be a contract or a physical document which has to be produced and verbal is when a worker and a customer are having face to face conversation or communicating to a fellow employee also by use of company telephone speaking to clients.
Communication creates the difference in success between two related companies. The company that best communicates to its customer will definitely have a large number of customers (Staw, et. al, 1981). Amazon uses both methods so as to attract a larger number of customers who are suitable with any of the methods. In order to have the best relationship it has a number of salespersons who do market-consumer research so as to cope with changes and deliver customer satisfaction. An example of the best method of communication that has contributed to the success of Amazon.com is advertisement by various social media thus reaching a large number of customers from different location.Amazon allow members to work freely and comfortable within the organization or depending on the rank. Different members of different ranks can work together to solve a major issue. By these way new plans, ideas and program suitable for the organization are generated. As a way to measure the performance of the company Amazon usually has some meetings to audit how far they are and what is the possible limitation arising (Berry &Parasuraman, 2004). Where there is bad work identified the workers are offered assistance on how it should be tackled and where performance is noted the employees are motivated as it aids increasing their self-confidence.
Nature of authority
Amazon organizational structure is horizontal or delayering where there are limiting or no center management level between the employers and the employees thus they are in close contact with each other. This forces the situation that the staff been included in decision making and it is found to be more productive as the staff report directly to the workers (Presthus, 1962). The employees receive full responsibility for their work and made accountable to it. They are able to apply their skills while adding other skills and knowledge through experience. Amazon giving its full responsibilities to the workers it builds up trust and when the workers perform they are rewarded thus increasing the strength of the trust and also increases the self-esteem of the workers and how they tackle their work. With this you will find the workers in Amazon trustworthy, skillful, confident, wise in their work and also loyal to their executives and organization at large. This aids to build leaders of tomorrow who will also extend the business and create more job opportunities for others.
Motivational techniques
Motivation is part of the Amazon Company’s plans and policies. It motivates the staffs who are performing and loyal to the organization. Motivation improves the attitude of the members towards meeting the goals of the company and this creates an environment suitable for maximum production despite of different cultures in the organization. Amazon employs two motivation methods which are extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic values include prizes such as gift cards, bonuses it may also include additional time off. This motivates the staff as there are able to see that their performance is appreciated and thus adds more effort on his or her role. However, this form of reward is may not be such motivating when the same type of reward is repeated. For example if you are given a time off of a week and when you perform well you are given the same as a gift this becomes monotonous and no longer motivating thus extrinsic motivation is not usually sufficient.
Intrinsic motivation is also important for the staff’s performance and for the success of the organization. The members of staff are given responsibilities and allocated work outside their normal work to test and challenge their skills. The company inspires the staffs internally trusts them and give them the responsibility to make decision on their own (Locke & Latham, 2002).
