Why Higher Salaries Don’t seem to be Best Incentives
The incentive theory of motivation states that workers are motivated by a drive for incentives and propose that a worker will behave in a way that they believe will result in a reward and avoid actions that may bring punishment to them. Employees show these behaviors differently when different incentives are made available to them. One of these incentives is increasing salaries to employees in order to better their results. According to Hesketh, P. (2016, February 11), Employers do think that the more the money employee earns, the happier and more motivated he or she will be. He states that in a research conducted by Tim Judge of the University of Florida, individuals suggested that the link between money, motivation and performance is much complex. He states that in fact the research concluded that even if companies let people set their own salary levels, they still wouldn’t enjoy the job more. Hesketh further insists that when there is too much reward at stake, it impairs performance rather than improving it due to high pressure that leads to panic. Too much salary will make one shift their thought on the reward and thereby lower their work rate.
