Chapter 1
1.0 Introduction
College and university enrolment has been on the increase for the past decade. Campus residences have also similarly multiplied. Many campuses have experienced a greater demand for campus housing due to increase in enrolment and concerted efforts by the various campuses to construct and promote residence halls. The institutions have invested heavily in residential settings in their existing and new campuses. This has marked a rise in residential learning with students integrating their various educational activities with their living environment.
On the other hand, students who are living off campus especially the “commuter students”, have also been on the increase rapidly than the residential students (Finch and Britain, 2006: 76). This trend has been accelerated with the increase in online learning where students can participate in the school programs remotely. However, these trends have raised various questions on the need for face to face interactions, the difference effects of living costs between on-campus and off-campus and whether their residential settings is having an effect to their education. In this context, it has become more imperative that the higher education policy makers and other concerned parties have a solid understanding to how the residential settings affect the students.

It will also apply the phenomenological research method that will focus on sampling that is idiographic to understand the critical approach to various organizations from the critical theory.
1.2 Conceptual framework of the study and design
A look at the conceptual framework of the study shall first need to be established to show the effectiveness of the study (Merriam, 2009: 34). Theoretical studies carried out on the subject shall play an active role to this research. This research will seek to support theoretical studies that outline the difference effects of living costs between on-campus and off-campus. It forms the part of the objectives and aims that the study is trying to achieve. Theoretical studies carried out on the subject of the difference effects of living costs between on-campus and off-campus shall play an active role in the research. This research will seek to support theoretical studies by showing the difference effects of living costs between on-campus and off-campus.
1.4 Significance of the Research Question
A well-written research question forms the central element in research writing. One of the important steps towards developing a sound conceptual foundation for the research is creation of a solid research question (Ary et al, 2009: 60). A concise and well designed research question forms the key to a successful research project. It provides a comprehensive map for the logistical and conceptual framework that will serve the purpose of supporting the structure of the research. It forms a strong question that one can support with evidence or facts that are well researched. The research question offers warrants on the general principles which the researcher thinks is relevant to the research. The research question needs to be insightful in ensuring that the readers can positively believe the researcher and probably change their way of thinking (Ellis & Levy, 2008:07).
1.5 Study Objectives:
The objective for our research projects are:
Find literature reviews on effects of living costs on-campus versus off-campus at Treforest campus.
Do survey and interviews
Compare findings with literature review
Compare and contract results from analysis
1.6 Study rationale

This research is to investigate the cause and effects that the difference of living costs between on-campus and off-campus.
1.7 Structure of the research
The structure for organizing the research shall involve four sections that shall cover the introduction to the research topic and critical look at the literature review, the findings and the conclusion. The report shall also include an analysis of the report that will include written descriptions from the research findings. The use of hierarchical listings and categorizations will also be utilized in the data accumulation.
