BUSINESS ETHICS
Business ethics refers to the implementation of business policies that are against ethical misconduct in the business organization. Some of the issues addressed by business ethical policies include discrimination, bribery and corruption. Employer to employee discrimination and bribery is common in most businesses. Therefore, some policies have been introduced to prevent this unethical actions in the business organization. De Cremer, puts across some claims about pragmatic business ethics. The claims put across shows how ethics treats business pragmatically.
Claims on Business Ethics
The pressure to succeed in business has made most businessmen to forget about their ethical conduct. De Cremer claims that people in business does not care about their reputation because they are driven by greed and personal interests. In addition, the author claims that high expectations in business has led people into ethical misconduct (De Cremer et al., 2019) Most people do not care about their actions or decisions provided they can achieve their business goals and enjoy huge profits. The author argues that crossing business limits may lead to loss of lives. In modern world people view business as a competing field that only the strong can survive. Therefore, according to De Cremer, most people say that if you cannot stand the heat of the business kitchen then you stay out of it. Therefore, most people argue that business is a competitive game.
The author intimates that there are two business believes. The first believe focuses on pushing business limits but emphasizes on not crossing the legal boundaries (De Cremer et al., 2019). Some people believe in taking actions that are not in line with the moral values provided their actions are legally accepted. People make every effort possible in order to achieve their business goals provided they do not cross the boundaries of the law. This approach is law abiding because it emphasizes on not crossing the boundaries of the law. However, this believe is disadvantageous because people may be forced to engage in unethical conducts provided their actions are within the law. Therefore, De Crème argues that business has created a tick-box mentality where people do not depend on moral values but the existing law.
According to (De Crème et al., 2019) other people believe that business is a gray zone. This believe shows how people push their goals effectively within their own limits. People use their own limits to push for their business goals. However, this believe may make people forget about their ethical conduct by crossing the ethical limits and also acting against the law. In this case, De Crème uses managerial accounting as an example. A business may ignore debts in a certain financial year with an aim of repaying them using profits of the next financial year. Therefore, this kind of risk may land the business in problem in case it is unable to secure the planned profits of the next financial year to settle debts.
Preventing Moral Amnesia
The observation of moral values is key in any business organization. Both employees and employers are expected to observe their ethical conducts. Therefore, good business ethics is key to any business success. However, in modern world, business people have lacked business moral values hence engage in unethical actions. Therefore, there are several strategies of preventing moral amnesia in any business organization.
Staying organized is one of the ways of preventing moral amnesia in a business environment. An organized business gives employees a sense of belonging. Therefore, employees knows who to report to in case of any challenge. This also motivates people in the business environment to observe their moral values so that they do not interfere with the operations of the business. Increasing employees renting is also another way of eliminating moral amnesia in any business environment. Employees who are satisfied with their income are likely not to engage in unethical activities (Ono and Ichii, 2019)
Review of the Scenario
The Municipality’s safety rules does not allow employees to go into trenches that are more than five feet deep without a trench box. Therefore any employee going into the trench without a trench box will be crossing the law and ethical limits. De Crème states that people are ready to push the limits in order to achieve their purpose. In addition he intimates that life may be lost in the
