Discussion of distribution method and associated documents
The questionnaire was meant to focus on a target group, which in this case was the employees (Azzara, 2010). Since the organization has 30,000 employees, it will be challenging to access all the employees. In addition, it would be costly, and time-consuming to interview all employees. It will be more appropriate to perform a survey than a census owing to the number of employees (Brace, 2008). Thus, the sample size would be created. After using a population size of 30,000 people, 95% confidence level with a confidence level of 4, the sample size should be 588 students. The questionnaire was meant to be answered by only employees of the organization. Hence, it is essential to ensure that the selected employees get to answer the questions. The sample will involve employees from various regions that the organization has branched out. Involving employees from diverse regions would promote diversity in the research.
Employees in other regions will have to receive the questionnaires through mail. Employees will mail back the questions. Mailing of questionnaires has various merits. It is easy to administer and less costly (Dörnyei, 2014). The major demerit is that the researcher does not have control on completion and returning of the questionnaire. One on one interview will be conducted on employees in branches that are easily accessible (Griffin, Zikmund, & Babin, 2012). One-on-one interview method has several merits and demerits. It is advantageous to the respondents, as he may not have to write. The technique also promotes high response rate. One of the major demerits is an interaction may result into bias response (Iarossi, 2006).
Critical evaluation of your questionnaire
A questionnaire is an instrument used by researchers in collecting of information from the target group. It involves a series of questions that are properly formulated for efficiency in capturing of data. The aforementioned notion was because of a need of a proper means of conducting a survey that could collect the right information for a study or objective involved. Methodology is the procedural theoretical analysis of the processes applied towards a study. A methodological approach is solely dependent on the type of study and its objective. In addition, the type of methodological approach defines the data collection technique to be used. In this case, questionnaire is considered as one of the moist efficient methods of data collection tool (Hak & Dull, 2008).
Questionnaires are widely used due to its flexibility and its nature. First, the use of questionnaires is believed to be much cheaper compared to other forms of surveys. Questionnaires do not require much effort from the researcher compared to telephone and verbal surveys. In addition, owning to the fact that questions in the questionnaire are standardized, the expected feedback would be easy to capture and analysis. The fact that respondent have to read and answer the questions as per their understanding provides an opportunity accuracy. The researcher has only to construct the questions in a format that the public or target group could easily capture what is required of him. Thus, the construction of questionnaires influences the success of the whole process (Noam, 2012).
This questionnaire was constructed adhering to the mentioned norms regarding the nature of the study. There exist two types of questionnaires based on the response that the respondents could give. Open-ended questionnaires provide the respondent with the option of providing a detailed description of the matter at hand. On the other hand, a closed questionnaire provides several limited options that the respondent has to make a choice. This study used a closed-ended questionnaire as there existed options in almost all questions. Other questions required the respondent to enter a number that is in a particular range (Willimack, Jones, Haraldsen, & Snijkers, 2013).
An appropriate questionnaire is set to investigate on what is really required in by the study. The objective of the study was to investigate on employee views on several issues. It is quite imperative to keep in mind the study’s objective while constructing the questionnaire. Poorly structured questionnaires discourage respondents from providing the desired response. Some may abandon the survey leaving a number of unanswered questions. Thus, it is imperative to observe the layout of the questionnaire. In this study, the questionnaire was well structured as questions were systematically placed (Wegner, 2010). There were no ambiguous or irrelevant questions concerning the issue at hand. The other element to be addressed is the fact that questions should be well distributed and clustered depending on the topics. It is observed that in the last questions, respondents were asked to mention on their satisfactory levels during both the survey and a while before. In addition, they were asked on their performance records in regards to the organization’s rating. These questions could be considered as related. Hence, the researcher had to cluster them together for consistency. The clustering process was also executed appropriately as all the clustered questions were well distributed in the questionnaire. Thus, it is imperative to organize the questions depending on the subject matter just as in the questionnaire.
The questions were made as short as possible. The researcher had to ensure that respondents could clearly identify the question requirement. There were no two questions cluttered as one as this could lead to ambiguity. Structuring of questions could be difficult. This is because the researcher would like to gain more information from the respondent but at the same time ensuring that the questionnaire is not too lengthy to some of the respondents. Hence, he may be forced to integrate two questions into a single one to be able to achieve some of his objectives. It is essential to note that two questions could only be incorporated into each other only if they were related. In accordance to this questionnaire, the researcher had a number of questions that he thought were most important towards achieving the study’s objective. There existed no two questions integrated into one at any point. This does not mean that there were no more questions that could be of help to the researcher. Questions like sex would have been a great source of information as the researcher could establish the gender distribution of the employees in the organization. Since the organization could transfer people to other regions, information on gender and marital status could also be considered essential while conducting the research. In addition, moving people to other regions is a major decision and should be carried out with utmost care towards the employees. Hence, the question of whether one would like to be transferred could be used as criteria towards relocating staff members. For those that agreed could be asked to specify the region of interest. Such questions are quite relevant towards the study but could not be asked due to the length of the questionnaire. The questionnaire had to be spaced adequately to provide respondents with the feeling of less pressure when it comes to answering of questions. Questions that are closely placed give an impression of having a high number of questions in one page. Once the respondents identifies that the questions are numerous, he or she might decide not to answer some of them. Hence, the situation of missing data occurs which reduces efficiency. Spaced questions, either numerous or not, look attractive and well organized. Thus, the respondent would not be able to realize that the number of questions is high (Willis, 2005).
Finally, it is essential to note that the questions had a particular flow from the first to the last section. While considering on the flow of questions, one can also notice that the first questions are less sensitive and more general. The aforementioned notion is because it is fundamental to prepare new respondents for more sensitive questions.
