Ecolab was founded by Osborn Merritt J. as Economics Laboratory in 1923. St.
Paul, Minnesota is its headquarters. To the hospitality, energy and food markets, it provides hygiene, water, and energy technologies and services globally in America.
In the early years between 1930 and 1950, Ecolab had Absorbit as its first product for cleaning carpets and later on Soiiax. During this period it was able to expand in America. Economics Laboratory grew internationally in the 1950’s. In 1979 Ecolab acquired Apollo Technologies which eventually shut down in 1983.
Economics Laboratory changed its name to Ecolab Inc in 1986. The following year Ecolab purchased ChemLawn since it could not turn ChemLawn into a profitable service provider which they sold to ServiceMaster. In order to expand into the European and Russian markets, Ecolab joined with Henkel KGaA a German firm to form “Henkel-Ecolab.” It later acquired companies such as Kay Chemical and ended its partnership with Henkel KGaA. It has been ranked by Fortune 500 Magazine and named one of the world’s most ethical companies by Ethisphere Institute. Nalco Holding company merged with Ecolab in 2011.Ecolab has had Bill Gates as one of its investors, he increased his stake from 10.8% to 25% through his investment vehicles.
