Introduction
Businesses require effective management in order to achieve the set objectives which consequently call need for various managerial styles. Some styles stipulate strict employee performance as well as adherence to set business processes while others are considerably lenient in matters employee flawless performance and freedom. Nevertheless, attainment of business objectives is related to other factors such as; economic environment, socio-political environment as well technological factors, (Locke, 2000).
To begin with, different business set ups favor different management approaches. This is influenced by the decision taken by owners or senior management directly dictated by the goals they set and how much they want to their products to appeal the customer. While some stipulate strictness especially in the operations level others are loosely managed and tend to believe their workforce is well equipped to handle processes effectively with minimal or no supervision. In this case, Smithers decided to employ the latter style which owing to his experience was the best to run his company. Fact-fully, decision making is very critical in business management but Smithers rather believed that delegation to employees is best. Importantly, he conducted thorough training to employees and once they assumed roles supervision was little and only when an employee could raise an issue. However, this philosophy is not widely applied because most believe that employee’s characters must be controlled while in duty. Ardent implementers of this philosophy however, believe that when trust is introduced around the working place it becomes easier for the senior management as well the employee’s feel a sense of responsibility and become much more cognizant of business process requirements hence its effectiveness.
Since decision making is the core of any business success it requires critical management to ensure that decisions are commensurate to the targets and aimed at overall business improvement, (Sheppard, Lewicki and Minton, 1992). The labor markets contain different characters and once fetched into human resource department tend to exhibit them in one way or the other. Some might be important to their duties while others could be detrimental to performance standards, (Roche and Ireland, 2011). This philosophy gives freedom and could give room to these unwanted behaviors. It also requires minimal or no supervision to be conducted by senior management which may lead to assumption of critical interventions believing that employees have got enough competency.
