Employee Diversity
Diversity at work place covers the distinctions between the colleagues and co workers; it also entails the acceptance, appreciating and celebration of those differences. During the decisions making process, diversity creates a platform for varied perspectives which challenges management to make salient decisions educed from multiplicity of opinions. Through diversity management has access to a wider clientele base which translates to higher productivity (Kossek, 2008). Nonetheless, there are copious challenges allied with the process of establishing and managing a diverse work environment, if those challenges are not managed properly they could be damaging to the company. Even in the most positive environments there are people who oppose diversity, it’s therefore the duty of the management to implement the right policies and guidelines to ensure that it can leverage on the benefits of diversity (Harvey, 2005).
The first challenge allied with employee diversity is negative attitude and intolerance which can stall organizational progress and minimize employee morale. This challenge can be handled through workshops that enable employees to know and accept each other. Poor communication is also associated with employee diversity, in a diverse work environment there are individuals from different ages, gender ethnic groups and religious backgrounds (Kossek, 2008). Along these dissimilarities comes also diversity in communication styles. One of the major challenges associated with a diverse work group is poor communication staff members. This is common since they come from varied backgrounds it’s easy to misunderstand information since people communicate differently leading to mystification which could escalate to poor office relationships (Harvey, 2005). In order to bolster proper communication management should encourage the staff members to learn more about each other in order to minimize communication break downs. This can be done effectively through diversity seminars, going for retreats and also holding diversity meetings.
