Task one: Introduction
The case scenario is of a medium sized hotel business that is located in the city of London. The hotel has eighty employees who work daily in the morning, day and night shifts. The hotel business is known for its friendliness and customer oriented staff. Ever since the last year, the business has been under pressure to increase its performance and profit due to competition from other businesses. The profits have been declining gradually since last year and the causes are unknown. The owner of the hotel is compelled to increase the performance of the managers and staff in order to increase profit. The Human Resource manager suggested methods of increasing the overall performance of the hotel through reviewing their staffing strategy and developing their employees.
To start with, the word human resource management is mainly used in organizations or rather companies, hotels and many others. This term is generally used in the description of systems that are formally devised to fully help in the management of individuals within an organization or a company as mentioned above for it being used in many areas. Many times a human resource management responsibility usually falls under a defined person who intern happens to have been coined the tittle human resource manager.
These said responsibilities are specifically divided into three that are inclusive of work designing within the company, compensation of the employee and the benefits that comes along with the said compensation and lastly staffing of the whole employees team. Predominantly human resource functions in an organization have been put in maximization of an organization production, these is many a times done by optimization of employees' effectiveness.
However like any other posts in a company or an organization human resource management also have its own challenges that if not recognized on time a tragedy as business men put it may arise within the organization. This challenges include; failure to adapt to this fluctuating workers profile, problems in understanding subtleties from the workers qualification among others that are quite many in number.
Task two:
Describe the importance of any TWO HR functions that are appropriate for the above mentioned business.
In any organization with a human resource post there are mainly a number of functions that help in the effectiveness of the company's activities as directed and over seen by the human resource manager in the organization (Yeung, 328).For any business to meet its goals, human resource department has to have run efficiently as per the human resource functions designations. In normal circumstances with organizations that are run with HR departments, there are six disciplines within a HR department in a company and they include:
1. Recruiting function
This one mainly deals with recruitment of employees, safety of the defined workplace this will ensure also the safety of the employee's at large inclusion of health matters and what a view, we also have an employee relations discipline that is mainly concerned with employee relations to an employer. This is mainly done performing a number of activities within the business season this may comprise of organizing events whose main purpose will be to recognize this employees and to a ward them of the good job they do (Yeung,329).
2. Compensation function
This is also done by initializing compensation through payment of individuals when a problem occurs let's say an accident or something else happens to the employer. The last function will be that of orientation and training of newly employed individuals. From the above mentioned business it is evident from the start bas we are told the organization happens to have got 80 employees who work round the clock that is to mean they work in shifts that starts from morning hours, afternoon and night shifts.
From the statement we can say that the hotel has effectively used one of the function disciplines that lie within human resource manager responsibilities. It is through a recruitment policy that the company accommodates this huge number of employees who constantly work to ensure the company gains and achieves its day to day set goals. The second discipline that happens to be relevant from the above mentioned business is that of labor and employee relations that mostly will initiate programs like awarding of employees and so forth (Yeung, 329).These practices will eventually leads to uprising of the employee's morale towards there working performance. The above business enterprise fails to use this HR functions hence we can gauge the fate of the hotel as the employer opts to turn round whole business, this may mean that due to much incur of losses in business, anytime soon the owner may be forced to close down the business.
Task three:
Considering the situation of the above mentioned hotel, discuss any TWO suitable workforce planning methods that can be used in their organization.
In any formal organization it is usually essential to have a well-planned working force that will help much in the entire running of business activities within the organization. This workforce planning is therefore a process through which when followed within an organization it ensures a proper allocation and the alignment of the right number of people or rather individuals to whom lays the intended specification of skills in a particular time thus delivering the best towards any organizational set goals (Mui,624).
This process therefore works best for either a short term or a long term objectives that a company have set in relations to its intended goals. It is essential for every organization employ this dimension of workforce planning for it greatly helps in avoiding instances of having scarcity of resources which may be an inclusion of labor in the type of business, market shortages and the number of people who in turn in the above business will happen to be customers.
In most cases workforce planning is usually seen and topped in H.R departments in many organization. It is many a time related to many aspects that include size, flexibility in employees work frame, labor demand and supply forecasting, malty skilling, out sourcing and risk management among others. From the above mentioned business it is evident that the company lacks a proper planned work force. The first work force planning openly seems to be of help the above business enterprise is that of:
1. Job specification
It is also well portrayed that the above organization has failed to consider workforce planning in terms of defining job specification as we are told that this hotel has a number of 80 employees who work in shifts but with no specification. Job specification will eventually help those in the business to clearly know where and when to be in a particular working hour (Mui, 624).
2. Demand planning
This is another type of a workforce planning method that could be of help is that of demand planning as a component that lies under workforce planning. This is where an organization has to determine the number of individuals who will deceptively work or be of demand I n the future. This specifically enables an organization to determine the head count of the number of individuals it will need to perform a certain task (Mui, 624).From the above business enterprise it is evident that the organization portrays an improper allocation of individual's roles within the company this has eventually tipped to an improper job specification thus leading to a loss incurrence within the business targets and goals.
Task four:
Ways in which the overall performance of the above mentioned hotel business can be improved by developing their employees.
1 Setting and communicating goals
The owner and the managers of the hotel should communicate clear goals and the expectations to the employees as a way of developing their employees. Most employees want to be part of the future success of the hotel and they would also want to get familiar with the feeling of excellence in the workplace. For the set targets to be meaningful there must be greater ambitions which are tied to the employees.
2 Transparency
Another way is through transparency and sharing of important information with the employees in the hotel.(Bowen, 164) The employees should know what is going on in the hotel and how their jobs contribute to the delivery of services in the hotel and its success in general. When employees are kept informed they tend to form a feeling of being worthy. The communication should be honest and even bad news should be shared with the employees but in a strategic way.
3 Open communication
Open communication should be encouraged so as to get an insight of the most important things to the employees. Metho...
