Introduction
Knowledge management is a process through which, an organization or a company can manage and utilize the knowledge that it possesses CITATION MEa01 \l 1033 (Earl, 2001). In general words, knowledge management can be described as the philosophy that is concerned with acquiring, creating and communicating the useful information about the organization. It improves the re-utilization of knowledge. It provides timely information to that member, who can use it at the appropriate time and place to achieve the objectives of the organization CITATION WRK09 \l 1033 (King, 2009). Walter Cameron & Partner is also one of the firm that is using a knowledge management approach to handle its business and achieving its goals and objectives. This project proposal explains the approach of knowledge management and its related issues of Walter Cameron & Partner.
* Project Summary
Walter Cameron & Partner is a US based firm, which was established in 1901. It is operating in almost 29 countries and it has 39 offices. The size of an organization depends on the needs of the clients, which are opportunities for the firm. It is basically an advising firm that provides frequent dispute handling and other communicating services to its clients. Its clients include different private and public firms and financial institutions. It has almost 300 experienced lawyers that give their expert opinion to the clients. The nature of the firm requires a strong communicative organizational system that can only gain through Knowledge management CITATION Mil15 \l 1033 (Milton & Barnes, 2015).
* Problem Statement
In 2008, the elected chairman analyzed the need of introducing new organizational structure through which a firm should integrate in such a way that could serve the clients globally. The features of new organizational structure were collaboration and adaptability. Thus, through new organizational structure the firm’s lawyers were grouped into regional sections so that different lawyers can share ideas and knowledge with one another to serve the clients worldwide.
* Project objectives
The Objectives of the project are:
* The first objective of the project is to provide efficient services to the clients
* Second is to serve clients globally.
* The third objective is to promote collaboration and adaptability.
* Fourth, facilitate the lawyers of the firm in practicing commonalities.
* Fifth, promote working in group and teams.
* The Project approach
The project approach depends on the knowledge management and its principles. As, the knowledge resource department of the Walter Cameron and Partner is based on three sub-divisions. The first is a professional support in which, the internal knowledge resources are managed and utilized. The internal knowledge resources include knowledge bank, the standard forms, knowhow, training and marketing material. The professional support creates collaboration in the internal activities of the firm. On the other hand, the second component of knowledge resource department is library & research and competitive intelligence. The library & research deals with the external knowledge resources. Similarly, the competitive intelligence deals with the research and analysis reports. The research and analysis reports help the firm in recognizing their strengths, weakness, opportunities, threats and other significant information about the competitors. The fourth and last component is connect. The connect deals with the connect search, interfaces, new search and internal policies & procedures. The knowledge resource department and its components help the firm to create effective integration at all levels of the organization. The knowledge management approach of Walter Cameron and partner rightly identifies and mapping, the need managing and utilizing the potential knowledge of the firm. Such an organizational structure can help the firm achieve competitive advantage over the competitors CITATION Reb04 \l 1033 (Barclay & Murray, 2004).
