The issue of whether marketing is the same regardless of whether it is for a service/good or e-commerce/brick-and-mortar has been a matter of stiff debate in the world of business. The critics argues that marketing goods is not the same as marketing services based on the distinct challenges experienced when marketing the services. However, this paper supports the viewpoint that marketing is the same regardless of whether it’s a service, good, e-commerce or brick-and-mortar. This is because marketing is all about research to identify target markets in which you can brand a product and create a competitive advantage (Sheehan, 2011).
Whether one is a cafeteria owner selling foodstuff or a musician offering their services, one has to identify their target market. E-commerce as well involves establishing the target market. In order to support my position, it is necessary to understand the terminologies market research and competition advantage. Marketing research refers to the process that links the consumers or the end users of the products to the marketer through information (Scase, 2007). Competitive advantage refers to those conditions or circumstances that puts business in a more favorable or superior position in comparison to your business competitors.
