Abraham. H. Maslow suggested that individuals are motivated by five levels of needs. The five categories of needs in the order of which a person will seek to satisfy are; physiological, security, social, esteem, and self-actualization. Amanda's old boss failed to meet the security, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs.
Security needs include job security, family security, and financial security. Amanda's old boss failed to meet her security and esteem needs through making remarks like "You're just a number. You can be replaced at any time." This meant she faced the risk of losing her job at any moment and hence, would be unable to meet her physiological needs. Most people desire affection and the need to feel needed(van IJzendoorn & Schwartz, 2008) .In Amanda's old job this was not the case there was no communication between her and her C.E.O. Failure to respect her, take her seriously, and give her a chance to express herself lowered Amanda's self-esteem. Due to lack social and self-esteem needs, Amanda unfortunately could not meet the self-actualization need. This needs an however, be met through team building activities, through promotions, rewarding the employees, treating the employee as individuals, encouraging ideas, respecting them, delegating, communicating with the employees, offering training so as to encourage growth. Also through, involving the employee in decision making, and holding office parties
According to the equity theory, individuals regularly compare the returns they are experiencing with the rewards given to other employees, in relation to the effort they contribute to their jobs. If a worker feels underpaid then a state of cognitive dissonance exist meaning that the individual adopts a state of mind whereby he or she perceives the reward to be out of balance compared to the ratios of other workers. They will reduce their efforts and dedication to their work, which will affect the activities of flight 001 and reduce their efficiency greatly. The manager can increase the employee's motivation by rewarding them, encouraging them, promoting them, providing a safe, and good workplace environment, setting team building days, delegate, encouraging ideas, celebrating success and giving a good pay.
According to Herzberg, hygiene factors include pay; interpersonal relations with colleagues; supervision; pleasant physical working conditions; job security; status and fringe benefits(Herzberg,1966)..
