Qualities of an effective Supervisor
It is undisputable fact that since time immemorial, people have never proven to be responsible enough, especially in the mandates that they are entrusted in. For instance, majority of employees lack self-drive; thus they cannot perform their designated tasks without close supervision (Harvey, 1997). For this reason, virtually all institutions globally employ supervisors in their various levels of operations who are primarily required to oversee a group of individuals as they undertake some tasks. In this line, this paper reconnoiters the most effective qualities that such supervisors in various institutions ought to have.
To begin with, supervisors should be effective communicators (Biech and American Society for Training and Development, 2008). Primarily, supervisors tend to be the main link between the management and the workers of an organization. For this reason, they must be able to clearly articulate the decisions and expectations of the management. This is essential as it ensures that the tasks are implemented as per the requirements. Therefore, effective communication, especially between supervisors and workers is inevitable for the success of any organization. Consequently, supervisors should have excellent communication skills.
Secondly, supervisors should be visionary in their mandates (Salfi, Hussain and Virk, 2014). In actual fact, supervisors tend to be the closest leaders to other junior employees in their respective dockets. Therefore, the characters of the supervisors greatly impacts on the performance of their junior employees. Consequently, supervisors should clearly articulate their vision and that of their organization to their juniors; thus inspire them to be part of the vision achievement. In a nutshell, they should always endeavor to mentor their juniors and lead by example. Accordingly, the workers will be able to perfect and improve their performance; otherwise the organization fails (Salfi, Hussain and Virk, 2014). Therefore, supervisors must be able to inspire and encourage their juniors in order to enhance the achievement of their organizations’ objectives.
Lastly, supervisors ought to be compassionate if at all success of an organization is anything to go by (Harvey, 1997). It is an agreed fact that no single human being is perfect in his/her deeds; thus it is normal for humans to make mistakes at one point. Therefore, such cases of junior workers making mistakes as they perform their tasks do happen in normal circumstances. At such times it is common for the supervisors to get completely upset and quarrel with the workers. However, this ought not to be the case as such employees who are quarreled also get upset and may retaliate by engaging in malicious acts that may cost the organization dearly. Conversely, the supervisor should understand that human beings are never perfect and have the situation corrected soonest rather than quarre...
