Moreover, this structure has to evolve as dictated by prevailing conditions to maintain and even improve the company’s relevance and competitiveness (Meyer, 2022). Starbucks is one of the few organizations that adhere to these rules of thumb and has its size, reputation, and performance to show for doing so. The corporation not only enjoys strong brand recognition globally but is also the largest coffeehouse chain worldwide (Meyer, 2022). These attributes speak to an element of uniqueness that, although a few other companies may share, makes Starbucks stand out as an entity to look for when seeking insight on diverse aspects of organizational excellence. For that reason, this write-up is a prelude to an investigation into how Starbucks conducts its affairs, particularly regarding staffing.
An Overview of Starbucks
Since Starbucks constitutes the basis of this analysis, it is prudent to provide some background information about it first. This step is necessary because, despite this organization’s widespread presence worldwide, some people are not familiar with it. Starbucks Corporation or Starbucks Coffee Company, often referred to simply as Starbucks or Starbucks Coffee, is an American multinational founded in 1971 (Tikson & Hamid, 2017). It has grown rapidly over the years to become present in nearly all parts of the world. Headquartered in Seattle, the corporation operates a chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves spread across over 30,000 locations in about 80 countries (Tikson & Hamid, 2017). Slightly less than half of these locations are in the United States, with the rest scattered throughout the five other continents in varying proportions.
The corporation is classified under the coffeehouse or coffeeshop sub-segment, which is part of the food and beverage sector, which subsequently falls into the larger hospitality industry.
