The impact of employment relations upon social and economic performance
Every country has always worked hard to improve the social and economic well-being of individuals since the interception of the country. In the process, a myriad activities and processes in the various fields of economics have been applied so as to ensure that the social and economic status of the nation does not remain stagnated (Dibben, Klerck & Wood, 2011). The UK is one of the countries that has worked tirelessly to ensure that the social-economic status of the country's citizens is maintained. This is largely influenced by employment relations of the country.
In return to remuneration by the employer, the employee enters into a work agreement with the employer. The employment is then offered by working under conditions that are stated in the working agreement that was signed during the introduction to the job. Employment relation has led to several consequences in the United Kingdom, which have greatly increased the performance in the social and economic status of the citizens.
The impacts spread over other sections of the economy with an effect in the trade unions, collective bargaining power of the employees, work place representation, among others. This sections of employee related segments of representation affect one or the other either directly or indirectly, and the effect may recur for the proceeding years.
Has the decline in trade union led to failed employment relations thathave had a negative impact on economic and social performance?
According to the UK statistics about the union members, the largest percentage of about 56% are from public sector while the private having about 14%. This implies that 26% of the employees in the UK are union members. The unions have been noted to have grown through a merger of the three largest UK trade unions with TUC having the largest members countrywide. The presence of these many trade unions in the country has thus led to the diversity in the collective bargaining of employees’ employment relations that impacting differently to the social and economic performance.
First of all, each trade union in the UK is independent when it comes to decision making. This gives the disparity in bargaining with the employer on the terms and conditions that should be imposed on the workers both at the government and private company’s levels. As a result, the employment relation has failed with the employers taking advantage of the different terms posed by the trade unions. The employers tend to consider those conditions that favors their part thus ignoring the others or taking longer in responding to those grievances (Williams & Adam-Smith, 2009). In the end, the employee's social and economic status are underrated leading to poor working conditions to the employees. For instance, TUC has been the main communication channel for the union employees' discussion with the UK government but due to formation and mergers with other unions, each union can form a discussion with the government on relation employment basis.
Also, a union having employees in specific fields of employment is not sufficient enough to impact the UK positively in employment relation. This is because they have few employees who will benefit when the collective bargaining of the unions grievance with their employer succeeds (Barry & Wilkinson, 2011). The result is that the majority who also face similar working conditions and environments from other sectors of employment are not catered for. This may thus result to a disparity in income distribution that may not raise the economic and social performance of the UK citizens.
The Economic and social performance of the in the UK could be achieved for better employment relation when the many employees from different employment sectors are represented. For instance, Unite being the largest trade union in the UK has employees as members from many different employment sectors such as construction, health service, road transport, printing, finance and even motor manufacturing.
The consequences for the economy and society today and into the future
A good employee representation serves as the fundamental basis for performance in economy and society. It is believed that the present predicts the future, and thus the future is made successful incorporating some of the present ideas to make it successful. When the employees are working conditions are enhanced, and then the present economic and social welfares are going to improve for that given country. In this case, the future improvement in the employees relation will be based on the foundation created before which facilitated employees participation and growth economically and socially.
The society is thus able to benefit due to the equality in income distribution from the various participants of economy builders. The economic conditions of the newly employed individuals are also likely to improve which then raises the economic stability of the nation. These employees will then favorably and willingly pay for taxes which serves as the basic source of revenue for any given country. In doing so, life will be easy to manage with the upcoming generation supplied enough of the basic needs like as food, clothing, shelter and even the basic education. With the basic education to individuals, the economic and social status of individuals will be easy to manage (In Dickens & In Neal, 2006).
The many various concepts have created a debate over the issue of the employment relation. One of the most common is on how to cope up with the rising demands for the increase in salaries on economy stability. As raised by many trade unions to their employees, one of the most common grievance is salary, remuneration and allowance increase that cannot be fully satisfied to every employee.
Are there features of contemporary employment relations which should be celebrated...
