Virgin Atlantic is an air transport company located in UK. It was founded by an entrepreneur called Sir Richard Branson. In 2014, they were celebrating their 30 years since the company was formed. Virgin Atlantic is UK’s second largest airline transport company that flies to 34 countries in 4 continents (Virgin Atlantic, 2014). In 2013, Virgin Atlantic had 8 200 employees of which 93% were locate in UK whereas 7% were in other terminuses in oversees. Virgin Atlantic has about 40% ground staff and 60% flying staff. By the end of the year 2013, Virgin Atlantic had 43 aircrafts in their fleet with an average age of 9.8 years.
Sustainability project (practices) adopted by Virgin Atlantic
Virgin Atlantic had a saying that states "to strive for brilliant basics and magic touchesâ€. This is what Virgin Atlantic had achieved in the year 2013 as stated by the sustainability manager. Virgin Atlantic aligned its sustainability with the main strategy in their business. The company has good carbon (IV) oxide emission reduction strategy between 2007 and 2020 by 30%. The company has adopted new carbon efficient aircrafts like the A330s. It is the first airline company to set noise reductions and publication of a Noise Management Strategy. The company is also making innovations with Sustainable Restaurant Association and it is working with its global onboard caterers (Virgin Atlantic, 2014).
How do the sustainability practices effect the 3 pillars (social, economic and
environment)
The company has partnered with free the children and it is establishing a good Corporate Social Responsibility in oversee communities. Since Virgin Atlantic has developed a good relationship with the society. The British people among others prefer to fly with the Virgin Atlantic airlines. The Virgin incorporation has promoted a good relationship with its employees by paying them well.
Due to improvements in the sustainability projects of Virgin Atlantic, there has been a resultant increase in customer base. Customers are served with food of their choice and can now enjoy ultimate entertainment while flying. This has also improved the economy of Britain and enhanced the living standards of other employees. Companies manufacturing the aircrafts bought by Virgin Atlantic like Airbus have also realized more profits.
Virgin Atlantic is at the forefront of ensuring minimal environmental pollution as seen in its sustainability projects. By reducing the quantities of Carbon (IV) oxide emissions, there has been a decrease in the level of Carbon (IV) oxide. Noise pollution is a factor that will consequently lead to reduced noise from aircrafts courtesy of Virgin Atlantic through its publication of Noise Management Strategy. Waste amounting to 95% resulting from food that passengers take is recycled thus minimizing pollution.
