The society prefers good new over bad news
The society has become accustomed to bad news; it has become so common that people opt to ignore it as a way of dealing with it. People have become immune to bad news, but, on the other hand, good news does not sell the radio stations and newspapers. The change of perspective has affected the way the media reports world events. There are cases where violent occurrences happen in a country, the citizens in the country go quiet while the rest of the world become fixated. The citizens argue that the international media focus on their disasters more than their development and, therefore, oppose the foreign journalist’s news. They claim that the foreign journalists see only the unfortunate ugly side of the nation. Some of these resentments prove that the residents are used to the bad news which is twisted to paint a negative image of a certain country (Wolstencroft 14)
Psychologists argue that amnesia is a defense mechanism for the preservation of sanity; people are careful not to overdose on agony and, therefore, prefer to keep off the bad news by ignoring its effect on their minds and souls.
Dr. Berger, a Penn researcher, reported that columns and articles of Science section were more attractive than non-science articles. He discovered that the science column aroused awe feelings and made the readers want to share the excitement with their friends.
