Recent technological improvements make it possible for almost anyone around the world to access the internet. The internet makes life easier, but few individuals use it for the wrong purposes. This negative use led to the emergence of cybercrime. Exploring crimes such as cyber bullying, extortion and identity theft will create an understanding of some of the most typical cybercrimes.
According to Cruz-Cunha et al. (2015), cyber bullying is when people harass each other using electronic technology, commonly technology that accesses the internet. This is common among school children and it happens through social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Risk factors related to cyber bullying include depression, low self-esteem and anxiety (Clough, 2014). Cyber bullying is dangerous and can be stopped when parents, school administration and students come together and find solutions.
Extortion can easily be used against an individual to a broader extent with access to the internet (Clough, 2014). An individual may use the internet to threaten to expose private information about another person. For instance, hackers are common users of internet extortion against innocent persons to get money or favors (Cruz-Cunha et al., 2015). As technology improves more sophisticated hackers are emerging and private information becomes at risk of exposure.
Another common cybercrime is identity theft. According to Plesco and Schneck (2011), this crime is common in the United States and the world. It causes cases of mistaken identity where innocent individuals are wrongly accused of crimes. In some cases one’s identity is used to promote pornographic material over the internet through the use of their personal social networking accounts (Plesco & Schneck, 2011).
