Purpose of an Operating System (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

WRITE A REVIEW FOR EACH RESPONSE TO THE DISCUSSION QUESTION. PLEASE BE POLITE. I HAVE INCLUDED THE QUESTION AND 2 RESPONSES. PLEASE KEEP SEPARATE.
QUESTION What is the purpose of an Operating System (OS)?
Please provide an example of at least three operating systems.
RESPONSE 1: Example one
RTOS which is real-time operating systems. This is a part of a machine that is housed in its own sealed box and allows other machines to be more productive.
Single User or Single Task System allows only one task at a time, such as an ipod.
Multi-User operating systems allow more people on more computers to network through they same operating system allowing people to multitask.
Computers come with an operating system installed on them such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, or Linus. My household has all three.
The operating system talks to other devices that it is linked up to either through networking or cable.
I hope I am on the right track here..
RESPONSE 2: The purpose of an operating system or OS is to be the master controller for any and all of the activities that will take place within a computer system. The operating system is one of the factors that determine your computers platform and compatibility. When you purchase a computer it comes with an operating system pre-installed. The reason that they do this is because if there was no OS installed in the computer; you would not be able to use the computer right away. Of course there isn’t just one type of operating system available. You have your choice when purchasing a computer. All of the operating systems are able to be upgraded as time goes on. The distributers of these operating systems are constantly working to make their product faster, more efficient, easier to use, and even more attractive.
The three most popular operating systems that are offered in computers are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. I have used both MAC OS and Microsoft Windows and just prefer Microsoft Windows because it is what I am used to.
Smart phones and tablets also run on operating systems. Again, just like with computers you are able to choose which operating system you want to have in your product. Some of the choices that are available on smart phones are iOS, Android, and Windows RT. There are positive and negatives to each one of these operating systems. It really depends on your personal requirements and interests. These operating systems like the ones that are installed computers are constantly being updated so you need to make sure you keep track when an update is available.

Response One
The first response gives the categories of Operating systems without actually defining what its purpose is. Real-time Operating system, single user and multi-user are categories of Operating Systems. The definitions of the categories are also not quite clear, terms like ‘sealed box’ are unnecessary, the Operating system is a software and not hardware.
The examples of the Operating systems are correct though the spelling for the third Operating System is wrong it should be Linux not Linus. Operating systems can communicate with other parts of the computer or other operating systems linked through a network. Use of the term ‘talk’ while describing how Operating systems communicate is not quite right. It shows a lack of adequate knowledge in this field due to usage of improper terminologies.
Response Two
It’s true a computer cannot function without an Operating System. The OS is the master software, and it controls all the other applications on the computer. There are...
