TV is the most prevalent form of media. Over 5 billion people watch TV daily. Due to this ubiquity, it is the largest perpetrator and spreader of gender roles stereotypes. For instance, out of seven artists who performed during the Super Bowl 56 halftime show, only Mary J. Blige was female. Similarly, women are underpaid in TV programs. At Fox News, the highest-earning male anchor banks $40 million annually, while the highest-paid female anchor takes home $22 million annually. Programs on other TV networks such as MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, and ESPN also suffer from similar issues of representation, payment, and roles across positions. This paper discusses how TV programs on major US networks betray male and female personalities through stereotypical roles, prejudicial representation, and unfair payment for similar roles.
TV programs betray gender roles by stereotyping male and female employees into traditional sex roles. Men take the most powerful, independent, and leading positions compared to women.
