The Basics of Decision Making
Decision making according to Jain (2014) is an essential activity that human beings must engage in throughout their lives. For a decision to be made there must be alternatives where the decision maker is required to choose the one or several options that have more benefits and less risks, taking into considerations the goals and priorities. The process leading to an informed decision has never been an easy one. It places an individual in a state of uncertainty concerning the outcome of the decision to be made and therefore must be tackled carefully. This paper seeks to explore the various fundamentals of decision making.
Establishing what an individual want to do is the most critical step towards sound decision making (Drummond, 2001). The second step involves researching and obtaining as much knowledge as possible regarding the issue at hand. This may include visiting a library to obtain certain information, making consultations to the experts in that line or even searching over the internet. The next step involves looking for alternative ways of achieving your goals. The obtained information plays a significant role in providing an individual with alternatives from where to select the best option. The final stage is very involving as it requires critical thinking as well as individual’s imagination in order to examine the most viable options as well as their possible outcomes.
Another point of consideration is determining whether the much anticipated results are achievable considering your needs, goals and priorities. This requires in-depth evaluation of each and every alternative stated in step three. Undoubtedly, identifying and weighing the most appropriate way to get things done with favorable results and minimal risks is a tedious and time consuming activity (Ernst, Hammerstein, & Stevens, 2012). Once this is done, the best alternative is taken taking into account all factors. Elimination method works well at this stage of decision making.
Implementation stage is next on the line-up. At this stage, actions are taken towards accomplishing the selected option, its goals and objectives. All the gathered information and advice sought are put into practice (Wilson & Nutt, 2010). If the decision was concerning a business idea for instance, the initial steps towards starting that business commences immediately. As time goes by and the implementation of the set goals is complete, results are obtained. The decision maker then engages in the final step of the decision making process where results undergoes some evaluation to ascertain their effectiveness in providing the solution. This provides an opportunity to select a better alternative as well as looking deeply into aspects that had been overlooked in order to make a new and a better decision.
