AS ONE.
Having six children was not an easy task. Eleanor, Ethan, Eve, Eileen, Elena, Edward, were the six who they termed as troubles. Eleanor took care of the kids without the help of her father or her mother. At the tender age of six, Eleanor was left by her mother for no reason. She took care of her brothers and sisters like her mother ought to. Her father, a perennial drunk apparently, only cared about how he would buy his next beer. His children were none of his business.
The kind of love that Eleanor showed her siblings was priceless. She was now nineteen years old and each and every one depended on her for advice, food, help in their homework and moral advice. Edward most especially needed her because he was just two years old and needed to be fed, changed his diaper, rocked to sleep and many more things that his mother would have done. Elena was seven, she loved playing with dolls but Eleanor had no money to buy her dolls. So she made herself dolls. This made her the most creative of them all. Eileen was ten and she loved watching television. She also had many ways of getting small change from small businesses that she thought of from time to time. Eve had just started puberty and she was gothic. At the age of thirteen she rarely spoke to anyone without reason. Ethan was the smartest kid in school and everyone looked up to him to do their homework. From the bullies to the cool kids, they all respected him for his capacity to think.
Each and every one of them was taught how to survive by their big sister, Eleanor. She woke them up early everyday for them to get ready for school except little Edward who was too young for school. Their father was either found lying in the street, under the bridge or lying on the ground somewhere in the house in the morning. All the six children had not seen their mother since they were small kids. Eleanor was bitter about the fact that her mother left her to go and live with another man as her husband. She was even disgusted just to call her mother.
All the five children except Eleanor did all sorts of crazy things in school. Ethan wrote other peoples book reports and exams for a fee, Eve and Eileen hated school because they thought it was for less educated kids, Elena was a bully, at her small age. However weird they acted when they were at school, they always helped each other in time of need. Every single day, they went to school together and came back from school together. In the evening after they sat at the dinner table to eat whatever little Eleanor had managed to cook, they sat to watch television together in the living room. Meanwhile, their father would either be drinking cheap liquor or in a prison cell accused of causing chaos to the public.
They hated their father for how he treated himself and how he treated them. Each and every day and night he drank himself senseless for no good reason. He did nothing ascertaining to taking care of his children or looking out for them. He assumed his parental duties and Eleanor had to do all of them. To make it short and sweet, Eleanor was the mother and the father in the family.
They had so many problems on their hands. They ate from hand to mouth sometimes when Eleanor hadn’t gotten a penny from her jobs that she changed from time to time. Sometimes her pay was delayed. No matter how hard the bills were to pay or having a decent meal on their table was, they never left anyone behind. Nobody ever suffered from anything serious because they looked out for each other. They lived in one peace and helped each other where one had a problem. They loved each other very much.
There came a time when their father was broke and had no money. He looked for loose change around the house because he wanted to buy himself beer. None if his children were willing to give a single cent to him so he sold half of each of their clothes in a garage sale. The children were furious and thought of so many ways to denounce him as their father. Each and every time he did something wrong to them, he never bothered to apologize. Instead he covered it up with how he was taking such good care of them at home which he had never done. He became worse as time went by because he was caught by the police a couple of times trying to steal purses from old ladies. Eleanor was always the one to bail him out of jail the next morning.
Eleanor knew that one way or another, her mother would come back and to her surprise, she did one morning. She came with her partner who claimed to start a family with her by taking Edward as their first child. How could she dare come back just to take Edward and not even care about her other five children? Indeed, they had nothing to say to their mother. They stood staring at their so called mother as she sat at the dinner table trying to make them agree to her taking Edward away. The only thing Eleanor said was,
"You are not taking away my child, you left him when he was two months old, so leave as you came, heartless and childless."
The children all got up and went to their rooms after Eleanor spoke without even tasting their mother’s food. All this time they taught their father was the bad parent, but mother was worse. But he was still too greedy and selfish...
