Identity and sense of belonging go hand in hand, and represent part of the most basic human needs. In life, an individual needs to set him or herself apart by being identified with one quality or the other. Generally, identity formation can be understood as the process where an individual develops persistent qualities and ways of reasoning that become clear to those around him or her. The factors that influence identity formation are many, and different individuals have varied stories to tell. In a big way, background upbringing is fundamental to the formation of an individual’s upbringing. Many people tend to adopt and copy what their parents do at a younger age, and stick to that throughout their lives. Education is also a strong influence in identity formation, coupled with cognitive factors and peer influence.
My personal socio-cultural identity has been formed from education and childhood teachings. My personality and the qualities that describe me as unique feature as a result of having gone through school, and being able to mix that with prior knowledge that I have received from my parents.
