Academic Success in High Schools

High school is one of the most crucial and life changing stages in a student’s life. This is because adolescence, peer pressure and tougher subjects are introduced and experienced at this stage. At this academic level, personal and social traits and attitudes, and up bringing determine the outcomes of academic performance.

On a personal level, the student should have self-drive to learn more, work hard and commit to long hours of studying. Through this a student’s attitude towards particular unpopular subjects would gradually change through practice. This self-drive can be nurtured through scheduling, planning study time and focused studying (Kanu, 2006). The student should also be brave enough to ask for tutoring, focused help and practice tests. This is the first step in academic success in High Schools.

On a social level, students should relate well with peers, parents and teachers (Kanu, 2006). Relating well with fellow students creates a good learning environment, can sprout discussion groups and peer assisted tutoring. This is then followed by a good relationship between students and teachers on the social level. Good relationships between tutors or teachers and their students’ eases communication between them enable the student to ask for assistance, guidance or further remedial classes (Alvarez & Frey, 2012). With distinctions, good grades and top marks being the goals in high school, parents play a major role in supporting and motivating students to perform better. Parents should also actively engage in the learning process and ensure that their children are enjoying the learning process.
