Access to Free Education
Recently, cases of school drop outs from families with lower incomes is rapidly increasing in many countries particularly from those underdeveloped.as a result, arguments are persisting as to whether learners from lower income families should have free basic access to educational trainers and resources funded by the federal government. Despite of convincing debates on both perspectives, I ultimately agree that the access to resources and tutors for children from low income families should be free.
Firstly, one argument based on why children from poor families should have free access to resources and tutors catered for by government is due to the fact that learners from poor families lack the matching opportunities compared to those from high income families. Marxist theories suggests that cultural resources that middle income families possess provides them the capacity to influence the education system and foster it to the achievement of these students (Porta, 2011). Certainly, it is evident that parental networks and influence fosters success of children from middle and high income families despite performing poorly in education. Therefore, this suggests that fairness of education opportunity lack to the low income families.
Secondly, Hymans theory advocates that different classes have various dissimilarities in socialization. When children enroll schools, kids possessing values and norms from low income families have limited chances to success. Duncan & In Murnane (2011) mentions that vast gaps in socialization limits ability levels of low income families’ equivalent to those of other classes. Consequently, to boost their education capacities they should access these services free.
Unquestionably, it is evident that equivalence of prospect is primarily restricted to material deprivation (Duncan & In Murnane, 2011). This is because students from low social-economic backgrounds have limited admittance to favorable educational assets such as reading materials and the internet. Furthermore, affording educational provision such as specialized equipment and private tutors is a big challenge.
Additionally, some students from low income backgrounds get involved in part-time labor at the same time attending school. Also students above 16 years prefer to get employed as compared to those of high class who go straight to the university. This illustrates inequality in terms of opportunity since the more the opportunity the more the money (Porta, 2011). To counter this gap, providing free access to education services is of help rather than the government encouraging students from low families to apply for bursaries and grants.
Functionalists like Moore argues in their theories that the cultural values of society and education systems must be meritocratic so as to foster the success of every kind. Accordingly, these functionalists believes underachievement entirely relates to...
