A digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and essential nutrients to feed the entire body. It plays a vital role in the absorption of nutrients into the body. The food ingested is passé through the alimentary canal where it is then broken down chemically and mechanically in the mouth and the stomach. The organs involved in the process include the mouth, stomach, small intestines large intestines and the anus. Accessory organs include teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pancreas and liver ("Digestive System - Untamed Science," 2018).
Digestive system
When one gets ready to eat the salivary organs are triggered to start producing saliva, a compound that helps in the digestive process. When one places a spoonful of food into the mouth, the teeth start breaking it into smaller pieces which can be swallowed easily. The tongue sends signals to the brain by just tasting the food; it also helps to push food to the posterior part for swallowing. Saliva moistens the food and begins digesting starch. The moistening helps to ease the swallowing process. Epiglottis acts as a switch to food route; it directs the bolus to the right path, food pipe. Esophagus is the muscular tube connecting the mouth to the stomach. It carries the bolus to the stomach for further digestion.
Stomach acts as a storage tank for food to enable digestion of large meals. It contains hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes that help in killing any harmful bacteria and starts to break apart food. Peristalsis mix and churn food until it has entirely broken it before being passed to the small intestines.
