In Bluefield, West Virginia on June 13th, 1928 John Forbes Junior was born. Born to an electrical engineer father John Forbes Nash working as at Appalachian electric power company, Forbes Nash Jr developed a deep interest for various mechanism and technological discoveries while young. At quite a young age, Forbes Nash Jr used to treat activities that his peers found interesting, such as sports and dances as one of the tedious distractors from his books and experiments. At grade school, Forbes Nash Jr cannot portray any special intellectual gifts he possessed, and his teachers got concerned about his immaturity and social awkwardness (Kuhn, 2002). When Forbes Nash Jr aged fourteen, he was able to read E.T. Bell’s men of mathematics. Having had the best credentials, Forbes Nash Jr was offered fellowships at the most prestigious institution of higher learning, Harvard, and Princeton to enter as a graduate student (Barron, 2004). He decided to take Princeton as his destination to continue the studies. As a graduate fellow at Princeton, he developed a deep interest in game theory studies and focused on the area. This interest evoked from an elective course he was taking in international economics at Carnegie Tech and also from the studies he was conduction thoroughly of the works of John von Neumann and Oscar Morgenstern. In the game theory Nash Jr was specifically interested in games which there were several players who could all potential winners if they cooperated though they were not were several players who were not aware of the facts on the situation (Funaki, 2009). He documented a 28-page dissertation on non-cooperative games which are referred to as the John Nash Equilibrium theory. In this game of theory, the John Nash equilibrium is the solution of a game in which opponents know the steps of the other players and no one can gain an advantage by changing his or her strategy. From the start Nash equilibrium were largely overlooked that the implications were not making sense, the military were the only people who accepted the theory and it theory was unrecognized in many areas of research. Nash Jr over the decade he traveled between established institutions of higher learning where he strongly attacked a wide range of problems in all field which included pure number theory to cosmology (Weintraub, 1999).
The Fortune magazine named Nash Jr as the brightest mathematician at the age of 30, when he started to experience mental disturbances (Klarreich, 2007). It is the time when he started to hear alien voices and declared an urgent need to perform bizarre tasks. Nash’s wife Alicia, married in 1957, tried to cover the behavior for some time, he was later admitted involuntarily at a private psychiatric institution outside Boston. He was letter diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia (Funaki, 2009). Paranoid schizophrenia is one of a subtype of schizophrenia where the patient has false benefits that some individuals or person are plotting to fight the. One of the things recorded is when Nash began noticing people wearing red ties on streets (Capps, 2005). It is believed he thought the men were members of the secret communist organization, and he was watching them carefully. University of Chicago offered him a prestigious fellowship at this time and he turned it down saying that he was destined to become the Emperor of Antarctica. His close colleagues say that he used to talk about extraterrestrial creatures, and there was government bodies working to destroy his credibility and well known reputation, and were greatly affected. He was then relieved from teaching responsibilities from the department having thought that he was having a nervous breakdown (Kuhn, 2002).
For Nash Jr case for the next 30 years, he experienced a series of temporary recoveries along with a series of lapses, which forced him back into mental institutions. It is unclear how it happens where some people tend to recover from schizophrenia with age.
The cause of his schizophrenia will remain a mystery up today. He regained fully recovered in the 1980’s (Shamir, 2012). After recovering, Nash Jr began to get better, and all the delusions diminished and become more engaged to his work. As he returned to full health and sane world, Nash Jr ideas regarding game theory had become widely accepted in the economic world and had received a number of honorary recognitions. The awards includes: the John von Neumann Theory Prize for his conclusion about non-cooperative equilibria and also a noble prize in economics one of the most prestigious accolades in all times (Rubinstein, 1995). In the year 2012, Nash Jr was given fellowship at the American Mathematical Society. AMA is one of the most impressive association of professional mathematicians. John Nash Jr gave a suggestion on hypothesis on mental illness in that he has faced one himself; he has also developed informative work on the role of money in society. John Nash Jr has proved to be one of the best intellectual having contributed too many areas of study, and his academic achievements are still applicable and will have further application in future (Kuhn, 2002).
