With increased globalization, studying abroad has become a norm. Students travel and adapt to the foreign languages through conversations and practice. Learners granted the opportunity to study abroad have a high chance of enriching their vocabulary. Hence, studying abroad is bound to impact fluency, accuracy, and complexity of language.
Socializing significantly contributes to the expansion of vocabulary. Taking part in formal and informal conversations with native speakers substantially enhances fluency. Research has shown that learners can improve their domain of vocabulary by active listening and speaking (Derakhshan, A., et al., 2016). Furthermore, study-abroad programs enable learners to experience profound gains in accuracy and linguistic complexity. Thus, social interaction while studying abroad helps in refining a learner’s vocabulary.
Repetition greatly affects vocabulary acquisition. Therefore, classroom instructions play a significant role in improving the accuracy and complexity of language. According to Trninic (2018), repetition is an effective practice that increases the frequency of encounters, hence greater retention. If practice is prioritized, length of stay abroad does not necessarily equal a learner’s linguistic growth. As a result, a learner's capacity to manipulate a new language through practice contributes to vocabulary expansion.
