Political socialization is defined as a process by which people acquire political knowledge, norms, values, attitudes, and learn about political behaviours. This process is very vital as it help people to comprehend the political system and shapes political attitudes. The processes and outcomes of political socialization involves cognitive, effective and behaviours factors like attention paid to public affairs, political knowledge, trust, efficiency, support, values, political discussions, and voting (Ehman 1980).
Family as one of the most determinant agent that has affected my political communication due to the close relationship between the parents based on continuous exposure, frequent communications and high level of acceptance. The effectiveness of political communication within a family depends on many factors such demographical, family life cycle, parenting style and frequency of political discussions. It affected my belief in participation in voting as the parents are the most crucial source of political information for their children than what they here outside home. Children motivate political discussions at home and compel parents to keep abreast with their kids’ political growth. This makes the parents to be the most important source of political learning other than sources like schools, peers and mass media (Ehman 1980).
Mass media is a powerful political socialization tool. It is not only a source of political information but also may have a substantial influence on political attitudes, opinions and values. Its effects became very important after the introduction of television, and the effect of newspaper and television vary. The political knowledge was positively associated with newspapers use while negativity was associated with the use of television. Newspaper and television news among new comers in American politics and the Korean immigrants to the U.S, the immigrants with high levels of English proficiency consumed more newspaper while those lack perfect English depended on television.
